Modesty Blaise

What's your favourite comic that does NOT involve superheroes?

From Hell.

Probably a tossup between The Invisibles, Den, Shugga, and MW.

Crime Suspenstories?

Hellcat by Kate Leth

Pulp fiction from the 30s

Actually, it kind of does, but as a parody peripheral to the main story.

There were a couple of superhero types, IIRC, Max Thunderstone, who was a basement dweller who had won the lottery and used the money to turn himself into a sort of Doc Savage type; and one of the directors of the agency the protag worked for, a literal comic book hero, a Superman expie, who had escaped the pages of his own book and now could only watch his Lois Lane-expie in the comics… and he read a lot of Rule #34 of her.

I really felt for the guy, he said "I start off planning to save the world, but then I always just end up masturbating for hours to hard core pornography." I KNOW THOSE FEELS, BRO.

A few off the top of my head:
Beautiful Darkness
Sam & Max
Resident Alien
Roger Rabbit
Rocko's Modern Life
Adventures of Tintin
Scrooge McDuck
Garfield
Danger Girl
Gumball
Peanuts
Snotgirl

Transmetropolitan, BONE

Commando, The Beano, Sexton Blake, TV21, Dan Dare, Roy of the Rovers, Modesty Blaise, Judge Dredd, Sinister Dexter, The Magnet, The Gem, Rockfist Rogan, Tintin, Dixon Hawke, Pre-code EC… I read bugger all that DOES involve superheroes, now that I think about it.

What's that?

thorgal or asterix. Also donald duck

Stray Bullets.

Titles published by EC Comics prior to 1954.

Collections of which, organised by artist, are currently being put out by Fantagraphics (they're also in black and white, but then again, I'm British). They're a bit steep, but well worth it.

West Coast Blues

I was going to say Love and Rockets, but then they do have superheroes, they just don't feature in the stories much. They hardly even count as supporting characters, more background characters.

I don't think Love and Rockets counts as a superhero comic, as the vast majority of it focuses on Palomar and Hopey and Maggie.

THE INTERGALACTIC NEMESIS!

From Hell, the various Grendel series, Eightball

Isn't grendel basically capeshit, the mc where a costume?

that was a poorly worded post, sorry about that.
But still the mc where's a costume, so wouldn't that be considered capeshit?

WEAR. Wears a costume. And Grendel is more a criminal mastermind in the tradition of Fantomas or Diabolik. A Villain Sue. These are no superheroes in Grendel, only Argent The Wolf, who is more of an antivillain who falls to outright evil in the end, and the occasional Grendel who is more sympathetic than most, or who is killing people worse than they are. But any of the Grendel "heroes" could easily be the villains of another story, or if they don't die young lose their scruples and become monsters.
Hell, Grendel Prime, the most heroic of all the Grendels, eventually became a heartless monster who would have even horrified Hunter Rose. And Rose himself would have no doubt disappointed the very duty-driven warrior Grendel Prime, with narcissistic self-indulgence and ennui being his only driving forces.

Good only when it doesn't try to get political or make the animals into allegories that don't make sense.

Arctic nation is the best album, silly.

It doesn't make much sense. Is Blacksad supposed to be black? Is it just animals with black fur that can be considered any race but are still looked down on? Why do some animals look clearly black while others are more neutral to look like animals instead of a particular race? These questions were put into my head reading through the series and I still ponder it.

Well it stands t'reason y'can't make EVERY animal an allegory, who would all those hungry allegories eat?

They tried to. First book had reptiles as either blacks or italians. Then the KKK and Black Panthers stuff happened. Then another story in like Louisiana or such with a drug addicted dog that was meant to be black. They wanna have it multiple ways but don't know how to really mix it well to where it makes sense.

10/10, read it in his voice

Christine Spar is probably the most heroic Grendel, and even she's driven by revenge.

I swear its getting dragged down by juggling too many topics.
