The interviews for TS are straightforward. Be honest with your responses. If they ask if you've ever tried weed, be honest. For the most part, they assume everyone tries weed in high school. It's all a test to see if they can trust you. As for spouse and friend interviews, should not have to worry. They're primarily looking for ties to foreign nationals, seditious attitude, or large outstanding debt.

Secret clearance is much easier, usually only one interview by whoever is helping you fill out SF86, if that.

Also, another important part briefly mentioned. Your financials are a big part of security clearances. They want to make sure you're not a fucking mess financially, because that opens you up to having a foreign agent have leverage over you. Car debt is fine, mortgage is fine. So long as you "can reasonable be expected to pay it back." Its kind of a sliding metric, but I've seen people lose clearances for financials more than anything else.

i got through both undergrad without debt thanks education fund! and grad without debt scholarship for high undergrad achievement and test scores. a masters might not be a waste, but if you go you better do some fucking internships in the summer. i've been on the non-academic job hunt for six months now. nobody gives a god damn about my scores, grades, or degrees.

Not taking an internship as an undergrad was the one thing I regret. I definitely will in grad school. Thanks for the advice and I hope you find something soon.
