What happened to Aku? He's supposed to be the incarnation of evil. The original seasons depicted him giving outlandish punishments for small infractions. So why did he let the mud men go after dirtying up his lair? The original Aku would have sentenced the mud men to get cleaned to death, or sent them to the mines, or something other than telling them to fuck off. Why can we see the bottom of the Pit of Hate? In the original Pit you had no idea what was down there, but you knew that you did not want to go down there. In Season 5 the Pit is basically a shallow cylinder home that Aku sleeps in just because. How does Aku not know that Jack lost his sword? We can assume that there was at least a few weeks of time between Jack losing his sword and the events of the first episode. Even if this was after the time Aku stopped spying on Jack altogether, how did nobody else notice either? There are probably spies in every city, and any one of them could call Aku at any time and tell him that Jack doesn't seem to use the sword anymore. Even if Jack never visited a city in this timeframe either (which is highly unlikely unless all of his armor and weapons in the first episode were salvaged from bounty hunters) then even the simple act of saving someone or defeating a bounty hunter could spread the rumor of Jack not using his sword to fight anymore. Why can't the Scotsman lend Jack his sword if he's still alive? I don't think the Scotsman is still in his prime and he probably doesn't need the weapon anymore either. It was shown to be at the strength and durability at or near the level of Jack's sword too so he doesn't have to worry about not having a weapon.
Why are we only two seasons in and I'm already asking these questions?
Ya mean two episodes And the answer is: Because you are getting fucking scammed. Tartakovsky is a crazy man on drugs and he does not remotely remember what he was thinking when making samurai jack. What's happening now is just playing on people's nostalgia to make money.
Jack Ward
Well Aku didn't know Jack lost his sword.
Julian Gray
How didn't he know? Anybody that Jack saved, hurt but not killed, or even passed by could have told Aku that Jack didn't use his sword and that probably would have been surprising enough toAku to warrant an investigation.
Matthew Perry
Well Jack said Aku doesn't know and Aku doesn't really seem to acknowledge Jack lost his sword and has gotten into a rut since Jack won't die.
Jonathan Campbell
But how was he unable to figure this out? There's no way that Jack's weapon being lost could stay in the dark for any reasonable amount of time with Jack's celebrity status as a hero/outlaw. Even if he always left before anybody could really observe that he lost the sword, people could just be surprised that he didn't use the sword and the rumor could spread anyway. Jack would have been killed by Aku before the events of the fifth season.
Grayson Hall
pretty sure no one would care if they get saved by jack's sword or not nor would they know his sword is special thus not pay much attention unless they were minions of aku in which case jack wouldve killed because nuts and bolts, besides it's not the only weapon he has used. Also I'm pretty sure it hasnt been only weeks since he lost it, since in the flashback he had his short hair and no beard and he seemed pretty adept at using modern weapons or guns and his fall into insanity which was most likely driven by the loss of his sword.
Landon Perez
Not many bad guys seem to survive encounters with Jack, especially with how he's gotten even more brutal over the years. He also tends to keep away from populated areas for the most part, and probably doubly so since he lost his main weapon.
That and they show how Aku has become reclusive and bored, I doubt he has the patience for intelligence briefings. Though once he DOES learn Jack has lost his sword, hoo boy.
Josiah Cooper
Aku began as THE SHAPESHIFTING MASTER OF DARKNESS
but he got memed into GREAT FLAAAAAMING EYEBROWS!!
probably because wacky Aku is more fun to write and perform, and the noisiest fans like it. The exact same thing happened with Stewie Griffin turning from an evil mastermind to a fag.
Jackson Peterson
You know. If the new episodes had Aku be pure evil and darkness instead, you fucking faggots would be making this exact same thread, but complaining about Aku not being humorous anymore.
Noah Torres
The joke is that he's serious when it comes to evil, but he can't turn it off.
Ryan Gray
yeajh like come on Aku has been hamming it up since the very fucking beggining. the whole point is that he's an asshole that takes nothing serious agaisn't the super stoic and lawful hero Jack. its all about the damn contrast.
Bentley Brown
This, obviously. But OP, you seem to forget that 50 years have passed from the last season. 50 years is a long time to stop giving a fuck when everything is now yours because your enemy has fucked off somewhere for no reason.
David Watson
In the comics, which supposedly happened after the last episode of season 4, the sword broke and Aku felt the lack of it magical power. The way Jack lost it was also different from what was depicted in the flashback in season 5 of him "losing" the sword.
Being a unique magical sword that was bestowed to his father by the 3 gods, Jack got it back after a series of trials from the gods to prove his worth as a warrior.
Assuming the comics are canon, this implies that the sword is still out there and it's just a matter of obtaining it again, rather than going through the trials again in order to fix it.
Cooper Sanders
So you watched the scene where Aku explains in depth why he's feeling depressed but you don't understand why he's acting differently than he used to? He doesn't destroy the mud men because he's feeling dejected and doesn't care. The mud men only even exist to show that Aku's feeling down because it's surprising that he doesn't destroy them the way you'd expect him to.
Aku doesn't know Jack lost his sword because he's spent his time recently waiting for Jack to die on his own and sulking in his pit when that didn't happen.
Lucas Morgan
This moment is taken EXACTLY from how Discord in MLP would behave.
Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
Lincoln Richardson
Discord is an aku copycat if anything..
Grayson Thompson
Aku doesn't know because he didn't care. He destroyed the time portals and assumed he could just wait Jack out until he was either killed by his minions or died of old age. When this didn't occur, and it turned out Jack was ageless, Aku fell into depression.
Seriously, did you watch the fucking episode?
Landon Baker
OP, if you suffered from clinical depression, you'd be pretty dour too.
Asher Brooks
Obviously he watched it while on the phone, like the ADHD spazz he is.
Nathan Garcia
For all its posturing, Holla Forums is really no better than Holla Forums.
Gabriel Smith
No we've recently had an influx of newfags after new Holla Forums hit-pieces got released. Why do you think there's been increase in spam, shit threads like the cheesecake one and cuckchan tier posting.
You're the only shitposter here, VPNfag. We all know your posting habits and your triggers.
Go back over the wall where they don't have internet, you autistic spic.
Gabriel Myers
Probably not, and if he did, he didn't pay attention. Aku is clinically depressed, not only is he at a loss of what to do with Jack now that he can't just wait the Samurai out, total and complete control of the world at large has left him bored. Both of them have fallen into a rut.
In regards to the sword, Jack has likely gone to great lengths to make sure the information regarding his loss of it doesn't get out. He kills Scaramoush before he can tell Aku. The people he saves over the years probably don't even know his sword is magic, or necessarily that he fights with one in the first place. It's not exactly common knowledge that his sword is magical. Even then, they probably wouldn't run to Aku to tell him that they didn't notice he had a sword, guy did save their lives after all, and without Aku going out of his way to check up on Jack he probably won't learn that fact.
Ayden Wright
Says a lot how it reflects the show itself. More or likely he won't be getting it back until the third or second to last episode.

I never thought this show would come back only to be an apt commentary on user's life.

Honestly I think Aku is just fucking bored. He completed all his life goals and really has nothing left to do for eternity. Samurai shtick can only keep him entertained for so long.
Isaac Wright
I think that he feels depresses because he accomplished all his life goals, also he feels constantly threatened because Jack can strike any moment and just doesnt die, any slip can course Aku downfall and that put big amount of stress on his back
Jack Fisher
Yes, though as pointed out countless times, evil doesn't mean being a brooding, serious edgefag. Part of Aku's charm is that he literally doesn't give a shit; if you've watched the previous seasons you'll know this. Look at episodes like "Aku's Fairy Tales", "Jack learns to jump good", and "Jack and the Swamp Monster". With your logic, why doesn't Aku just brainwash or threaten the children into believing Jack is a bad-guy, instead of reading them abridged fairy tales where he is either the hero, or Jack the villain? Why doesn't Aku just destroy the portal and leave, instead of mocking jack? Why doesn't Aku just kill jack on the raft ride when he has a chance?
explains it pretty well.
1. How do you know its the very bottom of the pit? We see Aku get out of supposed bed, doesn't mean its the very bottom 2. Why the fuck does this even matter? Do you expect some shrouded secret at the bottom? Am I missing something?
Yes. Thats his "home", its where we've seen Aku most throughout the show, and its also where people come to offer something to Aku in hopes of gaining his favor, or at least his attention.
This post is already way too long so I'm just gonna stop.
Tyler Wood
The comics are not canon so none of that matters.
Owen Hernandez
For who knows how long, the world was Aku's playground. He could force people to work themselves to death to build statues for him, send robot monstrosities to kill people for kicks, and do anything he wanted. If anybody objected to Aku using humanity as his personal toybox, he'd just zap them with his laser eyes.
But now he can't enjoy the world he's made for himself, because there is one thing out in his perfect world that can bitchslap him, so he cowers in his lair, hoping that the problem will go away on it's own.
Jackson Hernandez
Nothing wrong with that.

Charles Jones
They're actually still up on Kiketube. Or you could just le ebin pirate them. The possibilities are endless.
Connor Hall
whats the difference between watching it on kiketube and "ebin pirate" them?
David Clark
Aku is pure evil. He enjoys causing non-stop suffering, to the point where he allows moments of beauty and hope purely to delight in crushing it. He has expanded his empire to other planets so that he has even more opportunities to cause misery, from the grand to the petty.
Aku isn't bored. He wants to be out causing sorrow and mayhem, robbing creatures of what little joy they had so he can laugh in their faces. The samurai turning out to be ageless has left Aku frustrated, which has led to his depression. It's difficult to be pure evil when somewhere out there is a man who can defeat you and has overcome all of your attempts to kill him, including old age.
Jeremiah Baker
On the topic of kisscartoon, anyone have trouble using that site lately? I tried using it for the first time in a long time recently to watch the new Samurai Jack episodes and it was lagging intensely, to the point of being nearly unusable.
Brandon Thomas
Aku is actually just mad jelly of Jack's rugged new look. He spends all day sulking about the samurai's new beard because his beard and skin tone make him look like a bunch of carrots in a void.
Brody Bell
Wrong. I love discord and I'll maintain til the day I die that Discord is too good of a character to be on MLP. But Aku had this sort of schtick down for years before Discord was even a thought.

I think it's more both of them draw from the cartoon trickster god shapeshifter well. The therapist persona definitely has a bit of Discord to him, something about the shape. Otherwise, Discord is basically a meaner, more immature Q. (If such a thing is possible)
Samuel Nelson
you know they're married right? gendy and faust?
Elijah Phillips
This really, it just bugged me that someone would suggest that Aku is the progenitor of the concept. Though tbh I don't think the therapist was all that out of character and it was an admittedly interesting contrast to Jack's other self tormenting him.
No they aren't Faust is married to Craig Mccracken

Matthew Wood
Aku is kind of his own thing. I think he may have been inspired by kabuki theatre, his design is basically a stylised Samurai mask and helmet. (A bit ironic/interesting given Jack starts out in a futuristic version of full samurai regalia…)
Joseph Thompson
Aku is the demon from Frank Miller's Ronin, right down to the spider legs on his head.
Leo Ward
Even if it isn't canon can we storytime it or did we already?
Adam Kelly
Him getting bored reminds me of Dr. Doom when he takes over the world and wins but gets bored as a result.
Camden Martinez
That'd be cool. We can praise the good parts, and bitch about what IDW did wrong.
Jaxson Sanders
Because the revival is not as good as the original. It always happens, people cream over their nostalgia being revived but then lo and behold, they can't remember what made the original so enjoyable.
The 50 year time-skip explains a lot of the shit they pull, but it's still a worse idea than just continuing from where Season 4 left off. The new Scotsman design sucks ass too.
If it's the one I'm thinking of, you have it wrong. He wants to rule the world, but he wants to earn it and have the people willingly submit, not have the people be mind-controlled into doing so.
Caleb Hughes
Excuse me?
Parker Carter
You heard me faggot
Bentley Fisher
But he did use mind control to make the world leaders submit. He used Purple Man's ability to get everyone to agree with him.
Joseph Martin
And that's exactly why he willingly lets the heroes return the world to normal at the end, because he says that he wants to rule the world by earning it, not doing what he did.
Carson Gomez
Oh, I thought he willingly let them do that because he wanted a challenge. Well, thanks for reminding me.
Adam Garcia
You know there was no way they could do that, not after all these years. You said it yourself: people can't remember.

I mean, it all comes back to the knowledge that if he doesn't rule the world, Humanity would be doomed. Batleworlds and what not made his prophecy pass, so it's quite probable his need to rule the world is no longer necessary. Now it's just his belief that he's the best overall option for humanity.
Ryan Wright
Aku's plan was to simply destroy the portals and wait until Jack died of natural causes, great plan, brilliant plan. But now he discovers Jack doesn't age and on one hand he's glad that Jack is stuck in a world with no time portals but on the other hand he's depressed that Jack will seemingly be around forever.
His 'victory' for 50 years has obviously made him rather complacent and lazy, now he seems like there is no danger or meaning to his life, which is very understandable.
Also a reminder that Aku has always been both terrifying and absurd. Vid extremely related.
Easton Adams
On kiketube you can stream the episode. As in, you can start watching while it buffers… On the other hand, if you pirate you'll have to download the whole episode first then watch it.
I go for pirating. Because for some reason pirate downloads are usually of better quality than streams and survive shit like copyright strikes which plague streaming sites.
Connor Kelly
I have the comics, will storytime soon.
Daniel Scott
OP here, you guys are raising some great arguments. For some reason it just didn't connect that Aku acted softer than usual because he was depressed, the two just seemed completely unrelated. Either way, thank you all for the information.

this is my favorite moment from the show hands down.
Aku tells increasingly nonsensical and absurd stories to portray jack in a negative manner culminating in the humpty-dumpty reference.

Aku was always a weirdo with occasional goofy tendencies. He lived the high life for centuries ruling the earth but then out of the blue shows up the only guy who can kill him and now that he's in charge he was sure that he would be destroyed within a few days. But that wasn't the case. Days, weeks, months, years, decades pass and no results while all the way Aku has to become more political and do stupid shit to keep his subjects from rebelling while maintaining what little is left of his "enslaved approval ratings" to the point where his stupid shit involves reading stories to kiddies and being nice to literal mudslime immigrants. While all the while he has to keep hunting the guy who fucks up his immortal life. But the guy is also seemingly immortal and now he realizes that after 50 years, this guy ain't going nowhere and no matter what he does he can't win. So now he spends every waking moment in fear not knowing when that guy will show up to fuck his shit up and he can't do anything because he's already tried every single trick in the book. He has nothing now and he can only hope that the Samurai will just fuck off and leave him alone if he's not doing too much evil. Remember, Aku is just a tiny little itsy bitsy fragment of an ancient life destroying embodiment of demonic chaos and evil. When you add that to his long exposure to earth environment and human ways, what you get is just a really powerful sorcerer who realizes his pitiful place in life. That's why none of the gods or other mighty warriors and spirits do not bother with him. He is just that worthless to the point where he can't even conquer anything beyond earth. For you see, Jack's true purpose is not to slay this monster, but to inspire others and spread hope through his righteousness and nobility, and his actions have not only influenced earthlings but even people and other beings from beyond the stars. That is what his quest is truly about. Its never been about slaying Aku, its always been about his actions and the good he does and inspires in others. Aku himself may have finally realized this and its driving him insane knowing that not only he cannot stop this guy, but that his entire existence and all of his actions were all just part of a fated goalpost for the true hero of that world. Aku is just that worthless and it pains him so.

Kinda funny that Jack is being stalked by what seems like two visions of himself; the blue one looks like his younger self and seems to be the manifestation of all his thoughts and feelings he doesn't want to deal with, while the green one… looks sinister, but always appears in a context encouraging him to keep moving and keep fighting.
Joshua Martinez
The "Green one" was likely a living legend in Jack's time before Aku came.
Jacob Morgan
I've seen some theories saying this was an actual samurai back in the day, but I like to think that this is some japanese symbol for a samurai that abandoned his masters, a soldier that does nothing, but stand by and watch the carnage unfold.
Ryan Hill
His armor maybe a reference to that but it's clear the shogun is someone Jack's encountered and is afraid of. Possibly being the person who made him drop his sword down the hole.

Dominic Phillips
your post has really integrated my intellect.

Show of Return effect like how new futurama was so shit and PPG and all these others. When you have a good thing going you either keep it going or it gets too rancid to feed to the masses years later.

There IS danger: as far as Aku knows, Jack can kill him anytime the two face each other.
But nothing Aku throws at Jack, not even hopelessness and old age, not even a cult of human ninjas, can kill Jack. At any moment, Jack can find Aku and kill him. So the stress. so the hopelessness.
Aku just wants Jack to die so he can finally enjoy his victory. But apparently the only thing that can kill jack is Aku, and Aku isnt into risking his own life to kill Jack.
Leo Turner
Jack honestly seems more evil than Aku is now. I mean how many people have you seen Aku kill compared to Jack? He doesn't even eat children or anything.
That's probably the worst disappointment about this whole thing. I had hope the censors would be off and more now and they would kill openly more so than ever and they do but mostly concerning and reinforcing Aku's evil. Jump Good was basically an excuse for why a man with no supernatural powers can jump all over the place. It's never been as exaggerated as it was in the original episode but he makes 30ft jumps on the regular.
