Samurai Jack

The premiere of the final season of Samurai Jack was amazing. Not only did it establish the new status quo for the series, but it delivered some great action that is to be expected from the show. It feels like the Samurai Jack of the past but more polished and more mature, which is a treat for those who grew up with the show.

So how does “XCIII” stack up to the premiere ? Well, I’d say that the second episode of the final season is even better, delivering even more action and suspense than the first, and will leave viewers anxiously waiting for episode three.

SPOILER ALERT! Before we discuss the episode further, there will be spoilers in this review. While I’ll try to be as spoiler-free as possible, at certain points it will be unavoidable, so keep that in mind.

Unlike the first episode, “XCIII” begins on a lighter note. Viewers finally get to see Aku and what he’s been up to for all these years. It’s clear that the past 50 years have not been kind to the tyrant and like with Jack, he’s being haunted.

While Jack is haunted by his past, Aku is preoccupied by his present/future as Jack’s immortality is beginning to weigh down on him. He has to always be vigilant and look over his shoulder because the threat will constantly be there, despite his best efforts.

Again, like with the first episode, we get more tidbits as to what happened in the time gap, in particular what Aku has done. We are slowly but surely getting the whole picture.

As for the rest of the episode, we follow Jack as he’s met by the latest version of Aku’s beetle machines before meeting the Daughters of Aku. I was surprised to see the Daughters clash with Jack so soon, but it leads to me to believe that the Daughters will have more of a role in the overall season than I once thought.

We also get to dive more into Jack’s shattered psyche as some of the darkest thoughts yet start to burrow their way out of his mind. If you thought Jack was broken before, this scene really hammers home how deep his depression is.

The sequence with the Daughters is the part where the episode goes off-the-rails insane. The action choreography is superb, better than the first episode and possibly better than anything we saw before in Samurai Jack.

From multiple weapons to the changes in scenery and the weather, everything is masterfully and carefully planned to get Jack from point A to B, all done with little to no dialogue.

The first episode’s final fight had a lot of dialogue, to not only give backstory but to give a sense of levity from the imagery we saw in the early parts of the episode. The climax to this episode is the complete opposite.

The fight is brutal and Jack is pushed to the edge unlike anything we’ve seen before. The choreography isn’t the only thing that needs to be praised, the selection of music really amps up the intensity and the looming doom for Jack as he tries to fight off all seven Daughters of Aku.

I’m gushing here, but you need to experience the last 10 minutes to really appreciate what’s happening and the story being told, especially when Jack makes a shocking discovery at the end.

Overall, “XCII” is the best episode of the final season of Samurai Jack so far. It gives more insight into the mindset of Jack, gives viewers a dose of Aku and some of the most heart pounding action you’ll see on television. Tartakovsky and the rest of the team could have shown only the last 15 minutes of the episode and fans would be satisfied.

Another small thing I noticed: I loved the fact that “XCII” is a direct continuation of the first episode, as oftentimes in Samurai Jack the episodes bounce around in time or settings. The serialization between the two episodes was great, and I hope that continues in this season.

Believe me, this is the episode everyone will be talking about.

It's probably just a thing he tries to avoid if he can. He won't want to kill the sisters unless he's backed into a corner, which he will. I think the source of his surprise, just nuts and bolts is that he can't quite get to grips with the fact that he's being pushed to the brink by regular people.

But Jack spent the majority of his life outside of Japan. He looked like he was 5 years old when he was sent off to train around the world.

Seems pretty good so far from episode 1. If they go full faggot and ruin the story by putting Ashi in the spotlight, I'll be upset, but that doesn't seem like something Genndy would do and if she does survive, it'll be as an accessory to Jack, not the other way around.

I'm still convinced everyone is jumping to conclusions too soon that Jack has a problem with killing humans/living creatures. I think there's either something deeper with him and the assassins or a flashback to his first kill sort of thing going on here.

I trust Genndy and know he wouldn't do some dumb shit like that simply to pander to dumb modern crowds without sacrificing his artistic integrity. What concerns me is the new people around him who would want to fuck with Jack for the sake of their own views, like seeing Rebecca Sugar or another faggot at CN drop into his office begging him to drop an SU reference somewhere or make the sisters a bunch of genderfluid alien dykes for no reason.

Has he ever killed a living being that wasn't an animal tbh? He spent most of his life in training and hunting, and when he came back to Japan his only opponents were a bunch of demons that went poof when killed. Every time he fought a human/alien after being sent into the future he always spared them somehow.

But yeah, it is pretty silly to give him a fear of killing real things since a few of his robotic opponents looked real (like those grasshopper cat men or Huntor's elephant) and he killed them without mercy despite not knowing if they were real or not.

The bounty hunter episode has him definitely killing several people.

Punished Jack may just be my favorite thing. Also, taking weapons from his enemies is pretty badass. It'll be fun to see if they can figure out how to make him use them in interesting ways.

I was actually thinking of that episode as a reference. From what I recall, he spared the bounty princess and left her to stew in her misery, but I thought he spared the rest of the humanoid hunters, didn't he? Only ones I think were killed were the mind reading cats or am I mistaken? Also the Evil Jack episode had a lot of bounty hunters if I recall with most of them killed but turning out to be robots and those that were presumably were real ran off, like Huntor.

Him not killing people is more of a censorship for kids thing than Jack having a personal morality issue with killing.

Pretty clear example was when he basically killed the guy in S01E10 to free him from a curse.

In S04E11, the only reason they were able to keep the noir-like tone by killing off X9 was because he was a robot. Otherwise, it would be just be an implied/ambiguous death.

The last of those isn't a possibility. They're all human.

He killed the cats for sure and blew up the Russian. I'm positive he killed the other two guys too.

They do advertise in Chicago, although it is limited to areas where young people live. They are usually posters and bust stop ads, but this huge ad is in Wicker Park right now. Before last week it was Aku's face on solid black background with first episodes' premiere date below it. They should have kept the Aku ad, since it looked better and it stood out more.

Both of Baldwin's performances seem to not even be attempting to replicate the accent. I thought his Iroh was almost perfect except for the lack of accent, but Aku's was always much more pronounced so it really stands out. So much of Aku's personality came from Mako really hamming up the accent. Everyone's put off because it sounds like Aku is Russian/Mexican now.
