I disagree. Bill almost lost to a third party candidate who mysteriously had to bow out of the race for months on end so Bill could take the lead. Third parties are absolutely viable.

The two biggest problems facing them aren't brand loyalty or name recognition, it's having a strong central figure to nominate and a working campaign. Gary Johnson and Jill Stein just aren't those people, sadly. Johnson is just too low energy and Stein is kind of kooky with weird priorities. If you put Trump with Trump's money on a third party ticket he'd absolutely be able to crack the thirty percent barrier needed to win. Because remember if you have three VIABLE candidates the barrier for victory is much lower.

Either way, I personally think it was a safer strategy to leverage the voters of a major party, but only Trump could get away with it because he has the winning temperament you mentioned. I was young in 1992, but I was old enough to know that I didn't like Bill Clinton (he seemed like a liar somehow). My dad is a Republican and he was really excited about Ross Perot in that election. Perot was in the debates against Slick Willy and Bush Sr. until he dropped out later, so there is certainly precedent for third-party candidates doing well. Also, even though he didn't win, Teddy Roosevelt at one point quit the Republicans and ran as a candidate of the Bull Moose Party.
