The closest Jack got to hopelessness was the episode where he was climbing a mountain with three old dudes. He got a second wind after that, and just fell into a pattern, as can be seen in the Four Seasons of Death episode, specifically winter . Thee spring part of the episode does show his mind getting weary again.

It's important because no one should animate in photoshop and because Genndy is likely leaving out important details if he even indeed claimed they used it. Consider that almost all of the actual animation is done overseas and that only storyboards abd editing are done in the west. I wouldn't be surprised if he was just fucking wrong. Anyways, fucking amazing episode, I think something that people were missing with the "filler" robot was supporting the whole sequence with Jack not going to the town until his psychosis got horrible; he didn't see a point in checking out what the smoke, though it did linger for unusually long. He also didn't seem as furious as he would be when fighting, seemed a lot more calculated and quiet.

He's just sick of everything is what I got, and the episode established it very well.
He broke the phone because Aku doesn't know he lost his sword and he wants it to stay that way

It seems like he's become more withdrawn with the loss of his sword, perhaps less sure of himself.

I think there's a point in Jack saying to his hallucinated dad that Aku destroyed all the ways to get back in time rather than saying he lost his sword but maybe I'm looking too far into things.

I'm of the opinion that Jack saying that is likely him making excuses to himself when he says that, as he has said other such things before when he has lost hope, from what I can tell it seems the horseman has his sword and he fears facing the horseman to get it back.
Perhaps he was defeated and that's how he lost his sword, yet without his sword he feels powerless, so he makes excuses such as there's no way to get back to the past so why bother taking the risk of fighting a foe who beat him at his best?
If that makes sense?

Yeah, the point very much seemed to be that Jack has distanced himself from being the massive force for good that he used to be. Old Jack would have sped off towards the smoke to be a big dick hero, this Jack doesn't care enough anymore, he's basically given up. I get the impression saving the dog girls was more just something he did while passing through than going out of his way.

The swordsmen is a serious enigma. He keeps seeing it in relation to his family hallucinations, which means it's either a reflection of his personal guilt regarding his failure to achieve his goal, or a real person who fucked him up so bad that he sees no point in continuing. Or it's the first person he killed, and the daughters will not be that. Looking at the silhouette it kind of gives the impression that the swords we can see might not be on the horseman's back, but perhaps sticking through his chest?

I'm curious to see where they go with the plot. I'm really excited for the next episode, feels like the show's picking up right where it left off.

It adds so much to the character of the show to have the main character not be some chatty Cathy constantly spewing what's on their mind to no one, like a crazy homeless person. The trust in the audience to just sit in contemplation with the main character, and empathize with him, is so rare to see these days.

The episode was good, but not quite, I think, to the level of the last season of the original run. Here's hoping they exceed expectations.

Why did Musical Assassin just stand there after Jack threw the exploding knife at him? Jack was walking slowly dragging a heavy sword, Musical Assassin was shown to be very agile, he could have evaded/escaped.

Instead he just talks about how he's going to leave and stands there as Jack cuts him in half. That was really retarded. Like everything before then was really awesome but that ruined the episode for me. Introduce awesome antagonist, kill him off sure, but don't do it by having him suddenly act like an idiot.

Like he could have still dodged or used his music powers Jack gave him a huge opening instead he just stands there and lets himself get killed what the fuck were they thinking?

I noticed that too, however I'd figured the blast had injured him to the point where he couldn't run away, that's the only rational explanation I could think of, but it wasn't shown in any way in particular that I can recall.

I can't wait for the next episode, the fight with Aku's daughters is what I've been wanting to see most since the previews. Scatman dispelled a lot of doubts I had after the initial action sequence, I want to see what happens when the animators really get their footing.

Genndy said that he had a lot of problems with the opening action sequence, and it showed. But all of the core of Samurai Jack is there, and I feel like it's only going to get better from here.

I just watched the episode and holy hell it's fucking amazing. You fags can nitpick all you want but Genndy hasn't lost his touch one bit.

The animation is still smooth, the background art is magnificently painted, the ninja girls cult is a very interesting addition and I can see them building on the story of the girl with the spiky hair.
There was probably some flash involved but it was barely noticeable, non-Holla Forumsmrades won't even notice it. The creators used modern means of animation (digital drawing, flash…etc) to make the same high quality animation we're used to but with lower effort, and that's how it should be plus it's in HD now.
Hopefully this sets a standard for the (((other))) cartoons.

Can't wait for more episodes and for nuPPG to die a painful death next to this revived masterpiece.

On the technology side I was impressed with how well they integrated what is clearly a 3d model of Jacks bike into the 2d art style.
I think the bike is drawn in, in most scenes, but they did a very good job of making it not clash too much when used.
