A big part of the problem is that people like this are not really concerned with anything below the surface. They like to get attention and that's really it. Imagine a world with no other people in it. When it didn't they would struggle to survive and, probably, give up the first time they failed at anything.

These are people who shamble through life with limited interest. They can't see the beauty in the world because they've never had to struggle for anything.
