The argument can be made that the failure to learn from gentoo comes from the user, and not the distro itself. After all, you can be given all the resources in the world and still never learn because you are not curios, and at the same time, you can use Ubuntu and still learn because you want to poke around and figure things out. No one distro is better at teaching than another. I use Debian, and I know quite a bit more than I would need to run the system day to day, simply because I wanted to learn how certain things were implemented. Don't blame the software. The error lies between the chair and the keyboard.

Where did this meme come from? You learn how Linux works from examining and modifying the code. Unfortunately, GNU plus Linux plus X plus systemd plus... is too complex for a single person to understand. At best, you will gain a specialist knowledge of a few outposts of systems software, without really knowing how the entire system fits together.

The encouragement is inherent to the person. Nobody says that being left out in the woods is a better way to learn how to cook because you learn from the ground up, and yet we have these arguments for GNU/Linux. No, people that want to learn how to cook do not have to be starved first. They simply already want to learn that. When I was young, I wanted to learn the violin, so my parents got me classes, and I was free to continue to learn for as long as I wanted, and like all things, I was free to quit too. I didn't quit until later in my adult life when it became clear that I would never be great, but I still play because I want to play. This is the same thing for GNU/Linux. If you say that you might want to learn because you want to be the best sysadmin in the world, then maybe the motivation is also already there. If you want to do it as a hobby, then do it as a hobby and do it for the sake of it. If not, then do it because of your primary goal, of which learning GNU/Linux is secondary and a step on that way. Either way, a user does not need to be forced to learn if he actually wants to learn. That kind of train of thought belongs to hiki/NEET types.

Never tried Gentoo.
Just by chance, Slackware was the 1st distro I installed successfully. Had it been Gentoo I'd probably be running that instead.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I use Slackware, it was the first linux distro that I ever installed, and I have never tried to install anything else because Slackware has awalys worked.

If I were to install anything else, it would be because my use case for Linux would have to change. I use Linux to port my software to Linux, and other than that I just use windows.

What package manager does slack use?
