The F-35 uses up more fuel from it's tank by comparison and can't go the distance. So to get it there you need guaranteed air superiority so you can have another plane with a fuel tank to hook up to it mid flight like a neckbeard buying a 2 liter coke just to make it down the street. If it gets intercepted in prime condition it handles like such supreme shit compared to every other fighter it's expected to be concurrent with that the air force can't and won't defend it's dogfighting capabilities. The official line is essentially that if you come under attack and need to defend yourself you're officially SOL and it's your fault for fucking up somewhere down the line. The moment you get shot you're going to go down because instead of using two jets as is standard for basically every craft and has been since forever, it has one so there's no redundancy and you'll get hit like a fat guy and a coke with a glass jaw. This seems like a good thread to ask this: So I've been inquiring about taking up an officer position in the military. I took the navy officer test and air force officer test and scored 95th percentile in both. I think the air force would be more my speed but they just moved back the board selection to July, meaning the time I'd likely start this path would be in February 2018. I would likely start as a Navy officer in September 2017 however.

What do you guys think? Is it worth waiting a bit longer? My plan is doing cyber defense so I'm not going to be going into battle anyway. In the rear with the gear as they say.

I took the asvab (enlisted test) for shits and gigs and got 99th percent and they gave me a list of top secret clearance jobs to choose from. Some of those came with dank 40k sign on bonuses, but I would want to go officer if I did do this. I have a meeting with the recruiter later where they are going to show me what positions are needed. I just hate that this process is agonizingly slow.

The major difference is that the Air Force today has significantly more of a mission to carry out than it did during the post-war period. Flightline maintenance and operations some of the hardest hit groups of career fields, with many bases having to suspend flightline activity on some days because the maintainers would be constantly working otherwise. On top of all that, the transition to 5th gen fighters will cause attrition among older members, leading to yet more staffing issues on the production side of the house.

TL;DR The Air Force has low staffing numbers and 5th gen jets are going to make it worse.

My grandpa was an Air Force Colonel and had said that it was exceptionally political when he tried for Brigadier General, so be aware of that. Especially today, there are too many ways to get dishonorably discharged as an officer because of politics and office drama. I was an ROTC cadet for a while before I enlisted, much less drama when you're turning a wrench.

If you've already made up your mind about the officer thing, try to take the AFOQT if you can push back you Navy board. Most Air Force officers are entirely administrative. Maintenance officers don't turn wrenches, IT officers don't program, etc. If you like paperwork and just want to be a POG for a few years, then I would recommend it.
Otherwise take the Navy job and enjoy having your poopdeck swabbed every now and again.

It's a small group, you see the same people over and over at different commands and you're never more than two degrees of separation from anyone else. Losing 50k people isn't something that would go unnoticed. Most of us by 2006 had seen three and four deployments simply because there wasn't enough people to fill the rolls. That's a 6-9 month deployment, maybe that much time home, and repeat. And you see the same mother fuckers tagging you out as you enter and leave country.

Ospreys are a very overrated air craft. They're ok for VIP transport, but not much else. They can't lift for shit, and their rotor wash makes landing in a desert environment near impossible.

Since so much money and politics are tied into the making of these aircraft, they would log flight hours chock to chock ( ie the moment they turn up to the moment they turn down) and other aircraft would log their hours from takeoff to landing.

This may not seem like a big deal, until you realize that Osprey squadrons are getting time logged when they're in the fuel pits and when they're loading and unloading aircraft, while other squadrons don't log that time. These additional flight hours gives more money to these programs because GEE WHIZ look at all the hours we logged better give them that $$$ for the maintenance needed for all those additional hours…

Former ARNG here, can help confirm the modern U.S. military is an unimaginable disaster that will never, ever, win another war without a mass purging of all branches from the highest officer to the lowest enlisted.
In my last year, the state budget was so low that most soldiers couldn't get new uniforms without using their own money to purchase them from commercial retailers. I also got out just before my all-male combat cavalry unit opened to females. I never regularly served with females, but I never heard good things about females either. Because they always turn any unit into an Equal Opportunity minefield that constantly drains morale. Training didn't feel like it was for fighting, but for completing a checklist to avoid defunding that happened anyway. I could tell you more about suicide prevention, sexual harassment and rape prevention, and equal opportunity, than my actual job. I once saw a Power Point presentation by a captain that used Internet memes. Active duty guardsmen had to work for free during the September Government Shutdown.
And all of this is just stateside. I'm sure the limitless incompetence is even worse for soldiers that deploy.
