I don't really see any cognitive dissonance over the issue of killing a group of people who supposedly is all violent (not that I necessarily think that about Islam), when anyone here who isn't a plant or an idiot should agree that we ought to exterminate Nazis for being an ideology that supports genociding people.

religion is a coping mechanism for many poor people, and since most poor people aren't very educated, it's easier for them to accept religious dogma. there's a reason why the countries with the highest standards of living are generally the least religious. america is a major exception, but even here people are abandoning religion in droves. economic comfort breeds secularism.

still, in the middle east it's more than just an issue of poverty. since most governments are theocracies there, escaping religion is much more difficult. when the laws around you are derived from religion, that religion seems absolute.

islam is an abomination, but understand that muslims in the middle east are born into sharia law and indoctrinated from birth. these people were forced to accept islam, whereas neo-nazis espouse their backward ideology on their own.

but beyond all that, most muslims do not support the actions of isis. yes, a disturbing number do, but that doesnt mean you should treat every muslim as a terrorist.

nuking the middle east is one of the most impractical solutions to this conflict, though. we would make enemies of all muslim countries, which we cant afford to do. the ideology would persist and only become more vehemently anti-western. if you persecute all muslims for the actions of a few, then expect them to return the favor. i guarantee you terrorism in the west would only increase if we nuked them. islam is here to stay, and are only hope is that moderates help the religion reform. lumping them in with terrorists and trying to kill all of them is a bad idea.

This is why it is so important to combat Islamophobia at this point in time. So many of the imperialist wars being fought are against Muslims and so much of the propaganda is designed to get people to hate them as a group to justify the murder, torture, and humiliation of countless Muslims and Arabs at the hands of the imperialists.

If the US nuked Mecca with no provocation no other countries would be on their side. Many would remain neutral, while others would attack them. The US would have enough nukes to make sure that nobody else won, but they couldn't win themselves because any large-scale nuclear attack would trigger a nuclear winter and kill most of the human population. Their military wouldn't be strong enough to take on the entire rest of the planet in a conventional war.

Except in all likelihood it would just be the west vs the middle east, and not even the combined forces of Muslim countries stand a chance against the full force of the US military.

Even if the war is so limited, the US would become an instant pariah to the rest of the world after using up its existing arsenal and being weakened from whatever the Middle East could do to it. Its global hegemony would be annihilated, and it'd start waging war on the rest of the world to try to get it back.
