The masses remain content because they are able to have some luxuries that some others within the masses do not enjoy. The stock-owners have no power, and make no great fortune from their miniature stakes of ownership in Capital, but enjoy the luxuries and relative security that it buys and squabble to protect it. The "middle class" apes the fashions and sensibilities of the rich in order to bluff one another about their position on the pecking order.
They literally fight for scraps.
Democracy was what the rich Athenian Citizens who owned slaves or enjoyed the patronage of those who did called their Oligarchy. It's a convenient thing to pretend exists in the modern era in order to fool the lower classes into thinking that they have a government that represents them.
