Are there any laptops worth a damn in current year Holla Forums?

Hey Holla Forums
Just wanted to know if there are any laptops with powerful hardware for a reasonable price that doesn't come built in with Windows 10 fuckery
I'm especially looking for a 2 in 1 because it sounds godly for porn while keeping radiation away from my body, but I don't think any of those exist (and either way I don't think there would be touchscreen drivers for Win7 to use; I would prefer to avoid using linux but I might have to start learning soon....)
Help me Holla Forums

If you don't do vidya or Adobe shit, there is no reason not to use Linux.

Taken the penguin pill already. You won't regret it.

You forgot about the gnu.

Hello, Stallman.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as the penguin pill, is in fact the GNU/penguin pill, or as I've recently taken to calling it, the GNU plus penguin pill. Penguin is not a pill unto itself, but rather another active pharmaceutical ingredient in a fully functioning GNU drug delivery system made useful by the GNU binders, vehicles, and vital preservatives comprising a full encapsulated drug as defined by the FDA.

Many pill users run a modified version of the GNU drug delivery system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU drug delivery system which is widely used today is often called the "penguin pill", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU drug delivery system, developed by the current GNU Manufacturing Project (cGMP).

There really is penguin, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the drug delivery system they use. Penguin is the active pharmaceutical ingredient: the chemical in the system that enters the body and elicits the desired effect. The active pharmaceutical ingredient is an essential part of a drug delivery system, but nearly impossible to use properly by itself; it can only function well in the context of a complete encapsulation. Penguin is normally used in combination with the GNU drug delivery system: the whole system
is basically GNU with penguin added, or GNU/penguin. All the so-called "penguin" pills are really pills of GNU/penguin.

The new Dell XPS developer edition is pretty good, and even comes with Ubuntu by default so you can easily make a bootable arch usb

Picrel. Works gr8 with Loonix, touchscreen needs some setting up but that's all.

...

tl;dr: If I were you I would build a powerful desktop at home and get a cheap laptop.

I have purchased expensive laptops before and always regretted it after some time.

When it comes to laptops there is no silver bullet for good performance, good battery life, low heat and low weight.

More performance => more heat, more battery consumption
They simply just throttle down CPUs to improve battery life and reduce hear.

Bigger, bulkier laptop => more room for air and bigger heat sink => less heat, (probably) better repairability

People say "pay more, it will last longer" which is far from truth except for very few exceptions where there is more quality testing (like thinkpads, elitebooks, toughtbooks etc) buy you will always pay premium price, which is not worth it in my opinion, unless your are always going around and need laptop with you (business users)

Don't buy slim, lightweight high performance laptops, because they will have shit battery and produce lots of heat.

Don't buy touchscreen, its a gimmick. Waste of money, and glossy screen. Always buy MATTE screens.

So my advice. Build desktop at home with good enough performance at home for around $650 and buy cheap laptop.

My MINIMUM requirements for good enough laptop are:

Everything else is subjective. You can probably get a laptop with these specs for ~ $550 (without SSD).

You should ALWAYS reinstall OS when getting a new laptop anyway. So this is not a problem.

What ever floats your boat. If you want to be consumerist good goy that enjoys Microsoft to shit down your throat that's OK with me. Don't fall for Ubuntu meme, install Solus and don't tweak anything, it is retard proof. No learning needed.

Why MATTE display?

Because when you gonna jerk off and see your sad reflection in your peasant glossy screen, you gonna lose that boner.

Also if you need something lightweight, remember your not gonna get a good performance, unless you're OK with shit battery and lots of heat.

What is the sun? Unless you use a touchscreen (faggotry), there's no reason to use glossy shit.

Not sure if you understood the comment. In glossy screen you can see your own reflection, not in matte.

Thinkpads pre-Lenovo island keyboard.

what does "powerful" mean? it uses lots of power? in that case you might be looking for a desktop PC.
if you walk into a store and buy some old used shit for $50, it will have a very powerful multi GHz processor, GBs of RAM, and hundreds of GB of HDD

Enjoy your Intel spying

Can't believe no one has said anything about this top tier pasta. I guess no one else here has ever worked in the pharmaceutical industry.

Also Dem Satan trips

I like a lot about the toughbook, but the screen could be better quality in terms of viewing angles (is it not IPS?) and the keyboard is tiny.
The fact that the screen is still 4:3 is a big plus though. I wonder if I could replace it with an ipad screen or something?

I got a Sager NP7870 for college, as I wanted something powerful enough to still keep up for my courses for a couple years.
If it's in your budget and you need a discrete GPU then I'd strongly recommend it. Everything worked right out of the box on Debian testing except for the wifi card, but I downloaded and extracted the drivers over ethernet from Intel's website and it worked without a hiccup. The keyboard's RBG doesn't work right now, it defaults to a dark blue, but I haven't really tried to get it working yet.
Probably the best price to performance gaming laptop in the ~$1000 price range.
IIRC there was also an Acer or ASUS laptop with similar specs that had a 120Hz display, but it's Linux support was shit.

How did you know it would run Linux better than the other options?

I think the laptop is a new model, as I couldn't find next to anything on it in general on the internet, much less Linux support.
I hedged my bets by calling sager and the reseller that I bought it from, and asked if they had gotten any feedback on Linux support. I got a generic "Yeah, it'll work." but I didn't buy it.
So I researched all of the individual components to see if I should expect to encounter any problems. Only thing I found was that older distributions didn't work well with the wifi card, but that it was fixed in a quick kernel update a bit later.
Then I researched how the other laptops I was considering performed under Linux by searching for "[Laptop Model] Linux" and digging around to see what results were posted.
Most were abysmal, or pretty complicated, and had recurring issues, for example wifi dropping every X minutes, trackpad not working or skipping, etc.
At the end of the day I said fuck it, and decided to gamble on a potential success rather than accept a constant headache. If it was bad enough then I'd just return it and get something else.

If you're talking about the operating system, then you mean GNU. The term linux is the name of a component (a kernel) frequently used with GNU.

If you're talking about GNU, then you mean Systemd. The term GNU is the name of a set of components frequently used with Systemd.

Any brands to avoid? Which brands do usually have a better GNU/Linux compatibility?

I need Excel.

Kill me.

Does Excel do things that alternatives like Libreoffice can't?

...

For personal projects, not really.
For stuff I need for work, yes. I supposed I can just keep separate machines.

In general it's not necessarily the brand itself, but the grade such as business grade vs consumer grade. Business lines tend to be better vs consumer grade, not all the time there are always exceptions and you should check around yourself. But in general business > consumer grade when it comes to gahnoo loonix compatibility.

you can get away with 4 gb ram no problem on a laptop
