Forget Linux: 10 Reasons You Should Stick With Windows
Dan Price August 31, 2017
Have you ever had a problem with Windows? Ever become frustrated with Microsoft’s “unique” approach to privacy? Ever wondered why Windows doesn’t want to play nicely with your brand new peripheral?
You need to use Linux instead. At least, that’s what you might believe if you spend any time browsing online forums (or even our very own comments section).
However, nothing could be further from the truth. If you’re thinking about making the switch to a Linux-based operating system, stop right now. Read this article, then tell me it’s still a sensible decision.
Here are 10 reasons why you’re better off not using Linux. Long live Windows.
1. Lack of Software
What do you look for in an operating system? For most people, the answer is probably ease of use and compatibility. I’ll look at ease of use shortly. For now, let’s focus on compatibility.
Make a list of the programs you use every day. Done? Great. Now compare them to this list of software that’s not natively available on Linux systems:
Adobe Photoshop
Microsoft Office
7-Zip
Dreamweaver
Final Cut Pro
Outlook
IrfanView
I could go on, but I won’t. I’m sure you get the point. Linux users simply don’t have access to some of the most widely-used apps on the planet. Yes, in certain instances you’ll be able to find workarounds or use software like Wine, but it’s frequently buggy and unreliable. If someone tells you otherwise, they’re lying.
If you value the “everything works” side of Windows, don’t switch.
2. Software Updates
Even in cases where Linux software is available, it often lags behind its Windows counterpart.
Why? Consider this: Windows XP, 7, 8, and 10 combined account for almost 85 percent of desktop computers in the world today. And Linux? A little over one percent.
As such, companies primarily pour their resources into updating the Windows (and Mac) releases first and foremost.

What a great quality thread.

Sure, the very biggest companies can dedicate R&D money into Linux at a similar rate as Windows, but medium size companies (or individual developers) simply cannot keep up.
3. Distributions
If you’re in the market for a new Windows machine, you have one choice: Windows 10. Sure, there are a couple of slight variations, such as Pro, S, and Enterprise, but they are all essentially the same product.
But if you’re a first-time user looking for a new Linux machine? It’s time to go back to school. There are well over 250 different Linux distros you can choose from.
You’ll need to study a decent number of them before you can make an informed choice. To make matters harder, some of them are night and day in terms of features, user interface, and ease of use.
I’m not arguing against choice per se, but the bottom line is that Linux’s fragmentation is highly confusing, and thus inaccessible, for a large majority of people.
4. Bugs
Yes, I know, Windows is far from perfect. The operating system has bugs, and since Microsoft transformed Windows 10 into something resembling a perma-beta release, the issues are arguably worse than ever.
But look at it this way: Windows 10 is now running on half a billion devices. The silent majority don’t experience any problems.
Why not? Because Microsoft has a phenomenal budget and employs hundreds of people whose only job is to test and refine the operating system. Linux doesn’t. Even the most widely-used distros are operated by what is essentially a group of enthusiasts operating on a shoestring budget.
For technically skilled people, the bugs might not be a problem; they have enough knowledge to self-diagnose and fix the problems themselves. For regular casual users, having to troubleshoot Linux would be a disaster.
If you made 85 percent of the world start using a Linux-based desktop computer tomorrow, I guarantee you’d see infinitely more posts complaining about things not working than you do for Windows.
5. Support
If something does go drastically wrong with your Windows machine, you have several avenues open to you. Microsoft itself offers live text chat and telephone support, while every PC repair shop technician in the country is familiar with the operating system and how it works.
If you use Linux, you’re limited to a few specialist companies and the dedicated online forums. And in case you’re not aware, the forums are not easy places to get help if you’re a “noob”.
6. Drivers
Windows typically gets new drivers first, closely followed by macOS. Linux-based systems are lucky if they receive any drivers. The upshot is the Linux community develops open-source drivers that ship with Linux distros.

It's just not the same without
BY BRIAN FAGIOLI

I’m not knocking the people that work on such drivers; they’re largely doing a great job. But the truth is they’re often incomplete or lacking features. And because they don’t have the parent company’s official support, they won’t receive any help if they can’t make something work.
Again, for Linux fanatics, it’s not a problem — it’s all part of the fun. But for regular home users who just want a PC that works, it’s an untenable situation.
7. Games
This is probably the most oft-repeated anti-Linux argument, and with good reason. Many games never make it to Linux for the same reason a lot of software never crosses the divide: it’s not worth the developers’ time.
The situation is getting better. Steam has been working hard to port games to Linux, but it’s still a long way behind Windows.
A hardcore gamer would find life on Linux insufferable.
8. Peripherals
This is closely linked to the issues surrounding gaming. Even if you can get your favorite games up and running, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to control the on-screen action using your existing peripherals. In a best-case situation, a Linux developer will have reverse-engineered support for them.
The peripherals problem also extends way beyond gaming. Even something as essential as your Wi-Fi card might give you problems when you first install a distro. Do you really want to spend hours fiddling with commands, repos, and sources, just to get online? Again, for most people, the answer is no.
9. Complicated
Linux is complicated. Don’t say it’s not. It is! And I’m not just talking about the layout of the desktop or where to find various settings — a new user can get up to speed on that stuff in a few days.
I’m talking about using the operating system day-to-day. If you’ve run Linux for 20 years, then sure it seems simple. For someone coming from the plug-and-play world of Windows, even something as simple as installing a program requires research. It’s not intuitive.
A true Linux operating system is never finished, things are always breaking and need fixing. Most ordinary users don’t have the time or the inclination to fight a running battle with their computer.
When a tech giant picks up Linux and runs with it — like Google and its Chrome OS — the results can be astounding. But the distros you’re likely to install don’t come close to that level of ease of use.
10. Installing Linux Is Hard
Again, if you’re reading this and shaking your head, you’re in the minority. Don’t think everyone is as technically gifted as you are. For many users, the idea of creating bootable USB drives or installation CDs is bewildering.
Dual booting (which, if a first time Linux user only has one computer, is a sensible fail-safe) is even harder.
Of course, Ubuntu is one of a new slew of apps that are available in the Windows Store, so that should help make Linux more accessible. But if you’re not running Windows 10, or you want to run a non-Ubuntu distro, it’s as hard as ever.
Linux (Probably) Isn’t for You

Look, Linux isn’t all bad. If you a tech-savvy person who loves to tinker, you’ll probably have great fun using it. It’s more secure than Windows and in many ways, it’s more customizable.
However, if you’re the type of user who likes to press the power button and have everything just work smoothly and without hiccups, you should give it a wide berth. If you think Windows occasionally gives you a headache, you haven’t seen anything yet.
Did you try Linux? Did you stick with it or return to the comfort of the Microsoft ecosystem? Why do you think most Windows users would be foolish to make the switch? You can leave all your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.

Sadly true.

That GET doesn't change the fact that literally nobody but a few autists call Linux "GNU/Linux".

I know this is bait

I stick to linux for single reason tbh - performance. For windows to be usable for me, I'd have to format and reinstall it every 3-4 weeks cuz that's the average time after which system rot kicks in and it starts to be slow as shit. If they fix this issue I'll most likely start using windows again, but let's not fool ourselves - they won't fix it, pajeets will just add more and more layers of bloat until even commercial customers can't ignore it and start searching for alternatives. It almost looks like MS ditched their os to work on other stuff at this point.

Honestly, using "babby duck" as a reason to keep using Windows seems wrong to me. Why? Because Windows doesn't have a way to update all your software with one command/button.

Why OP, just why?
This torture...
Microsoft office... Outlook... "Linux keeps breaking"... "Bugs"... Games...

5. MORE LOL!
6. Only thing worth considering but the lag isn't that far behind. The last machine I built it still took me 4 time longer to get windows running compared to Ubuntu
7. The many failure of directx will kill this. Hello Vulkan
8. Horseshit
9. What? Yeh has never used linux
10. What? Yeh has never used linux. Its fucking ridiculously easy to install a modern distro

0/10 retard.

It depends on what you're used to. I can name software I use daily that works like shit on windows or just plain doesn't exist. Give me a windows machine and the first thing you'll see me do is pulling my hairs figuring out how to set up cygwin properly.
A lot of the software on that list has equivalents on linux (why would you even want 7zip when you have the vastly superior file-roller?) and running stuff on wine is a joke.

Sadly true, but for whole different reasons. Developers that develop their application in a cross-platform manner usually don't have to do more work for linux besided the initial porting, and as such providing updates is trivial. What does tend to lag, however, are package repositories. But in exchange for that little lag you get well-tested and stable software so it's usually a non-issue, really.

If you don't want to choose, just don't! You're choosing to leave windows, but choosing what you're replacing it with is too much of a hassle? Talk about hypocrisy.
Really though, if you just want to try any flavour of linux and you don't really care what, just look at screenshots of the different Ubuntu variants and pick whichever you like. Still too much choice? Pick Ubuntu.

This is just downright insulting and shows you didn't bother to do any research.
The linux kernel itself is actively being developed by tons of people from different companies - including Google and Microsoft - as well as volunteers.
Some linux distributions are backed by companies as well, such as RedHat and Canonical.

If you show any signs of competence and not just "please fix this for me", but rather a "please help me understand how to fix this" attitude, there's tons of online communities that'd be more than willing to help. Let me tell you, there's no better feeling than getting help with your problem from the developer of the software you're having problems with themselves!
Unfortunately, you have to be willing to learn how to operate your computer, if need be. If you can't take that, please continue listening to shitty music for hours while waiting for the support line.

Finally, a valid point. Yes, driver support is crap, but you can't really blame that on linux. Hardware manufacturers that are not interested in working on drivers for alternative operating systems should provide documentation for it to be feasible to get that device working.
However, thanks to the hard work of tons of people reverse engineering this documentation, there's already tons of drivers, and most boxes will work just fine. You will only maybe have problems with the graphics card and the wireless card, since those are pretty complex devices, and, as you said, they can lack features. Other than those, you can usually forget about hunting down drivers, because pretty much everything is there.

This is largely the same point as 1 and 6. We can't force game developers to work for linux, so you can't really blame it.
If you're a "pro gamer" you're probably going to see little value in linux anyway, since the privacy and security issues arise from running closed source software in general.
Thankfully, for the casual gamer, there's tons of really cool games for linux, if you look further than your "favorite games" bubble.

No, this is more close to the issues with drivers. Won't go into this again.

Windows is complicated. Don’t say it’s not. It is! And I’m not just talking about the layout of the desktop or where to find various settings — a new user can get up to speed on that stuff in a few days.
I’m talking about using the operating system day-to-day. If you’ve run Windows for 20 years, then sure it seems simple. For someone coming from the plug-and-play world of Linux, even something as simple as installing a program requires research. It’s not intuitive.
A true operating system is never finished, things are always breaking and need fixing. Most ordinary users don’t have the time or the inclination to fight a running battle with their computer, which is why it's updated frequently.
(In case this point fell flat: I'm basically saying that installing or removing software on windows is as, if not more tedious/confusing as installing software on linux)

Look, I'm not telling you you should Linux. I couldn't really care less. What I'm trying to tell you is that you should seriously consider researching properly before making misinformed or even outright false statements. Besides, on the flipside of the coin, I've been using Linux most of my life, and while I can manage to get by on windows, I find the experience tedious, confusing, and it doesn't even run most of the tools I like properly. Please consider for a moment that you might be having trouble learning to use something new, because you're trying to use it in a way it's not meant to be.

Windows is actually a great containment OS for tards like OP. I hope it never goes away. There are already too many Windows imbeciles switching to Linux.

OP here, I was posting the article because I stumbled across it and laughed at the idiocy.
It sounds like the author installed Ubuntu once, forgot about it, then later decided that he'd just install Gentoo, his idiocracy somehow being the fault of Linux.
Most of his arguments are reiterating the same retarded easily BTFO points.
I just decided to share because the Fagioli poster inspired me.

I can't believe this faggot implies lack of these programs is a deal breaker. A fucking irfan view . It's just a freeware image viewer, there's thousands of these. Fucking outlook. Are people still using this shit ???? The only program on this list that j can understand is Photoshop. Linux has gimp, but it's way different so it would e hard for someone to just switch from PS to gimp. Linux doesn't have 7 zip , that's just a lie.

linux is spyware, dont use it if you value your privacy

...

Yea, suuuure, tell me how good the support from mobo producers is. Tell me about AGESA, IOMMU, SVN and others. Tell me how my RX560 STILL does not have proper support in a relatively stable kernel version 4 months later.

Go suck a bucket of dicks. You clearly are one of those fags who dual-boot.

Well said, user. But, you're still a raging faggot.

Redmond employee detected. Get the fuck out, Schlomo. Go peddle your poison somewhere else.

Oh boy I just want to punch him in the face so bad.

2/10 bait article OP, made me respond. Now I'm slightly angry. Fuck you.

Man. This guy sounds like some sort of magical tech wizard. We better heed his advice.

So what? Who needs that piece of shit?

7z is crossplatform you dumbass

proprietary botnet and bloatware

has more than adequate alternatives for GNU/Linux

On the other hand, Wincucks doesn't have proper builds for Darktable (the superior raw development tool for real photographers), and many other handy software which is usually taken for granted (rsync, ssh, etc…). There is really no replacement for that.

The author of this poorly researched article is from Mexico.

Now he is going full retard, Wine is of course not perfect but the development is highly active. I have managed to get running several older games and a few newer games such as STALKER and they all work pretty good in Wine the only downside with is that some games need more fiddling while the others might need less fiddling but otherwise it works. Wine is reliable enough to get STALKER working considering its X-Ray engine is held together by duct tapes and glue. GNU+Linux newbies can use Lutris or PlayOnLinux to make this task simpler, which of course the author fails to write to its readers these programs exist and thus shows how much effort he put into his "Research". There is also WineHQ app database which has a lot of guides in how to get it running and test result, calling Wine as "Unreliable" and "Buggy" is nothing more but slander. Also GOG version can be used for Wine which tends to work better since those guys try to get those games working on a newer Wangblows version.
Yeah say it again, Pedro.

So what gives? Even if GNU+Linux development is slower than those Pajeets ""programmers"" at Microshit, newer updates happens frequently enough for the users to install, its not like you need to wait months in order to get new updates maybe for a few specific software which you would like to have updated but even then there are several solutions available for this case, such as compiling directly from source, adding a new package source, appimages, flatpak and snap, binary files and lastly changing the distribution which uses rolling-release for its software update such as Arch Linux which is made for experienced users or Manjaro which comes with several packages already installed and is thus a bit easier to use. But otherwise any distribution based on Ubuntu or Linux mint is sufficient. GNU+Linux has also the added benefits that you don't have to *restart your OS all the time just because of a few software updates which is something that Macroshit never bothered to fix it and instead made it even worse in Wangblows 10, which Pedro failed again to address it. So in other words there is a lot of solutions to get newer software updates, you are not forced to only use updates available via the software update manager.
*Restarting is needed if you want to use newer Kernel version since thats the whole thing running it.
There is also other computer type market share too Pedro. Such as servers and supercomputers, for supercomputers the top 500 is using Linux exclusively and in servers Linux is used a lot too. Only in desktop/laptop market share is it dominated by Wangblows next to MacOS and lastly Linux. But that is another issue which I don't want to cover it yet.

This user made already good point:

Maybe if you are trying to use Gentoo, Archlinux and what else as your first Distribution then of course it will be hard. Ubuntu and its variants as well Linux Mint is made for newbies but again if you are unwilling to learn how it works differently then maybe Linux as a whole is not for you.

Bullshit excuses, You can look up any videos in how to get a Linux Distribution installed which is pretty straight forwarded, the only part that is a bit more difficult is probably the partition part which if you are not reading carefully you can get your whole HDD erased. You can always buy a cheapish HDD/SDD or a USB stick and try installing Linux from there first before you decide to partition your main HDD if you are worried about that, you can also go so far to unplug your main HDD and plug in something else to install a Distro in it permanently. Also you can buy a ready to use Linux Distro which is available both in bootable USB and in DVD so you don't even need to create one if you don't know how. And lastly you can download a Virtual Machine program to test it from here first before doing any other major steps.

And now this Author even claims you need 20 years experience in order to gitgud at GNU+Linux, I am using Linux Distro just for like 3 years or so and I have yet to experience something that seriously pisses me off which would make me wish I would have sticked to pirated Wangblows instead.

which software are you talking about?
without specific examples this is pure horse shit, because Windows doesn't even have any official package manager and in general you'll get jacked when you download these unsigned .exe/.msi files over unprotected http or from fuck knows what sources, and then agree to all these UAC prompts saying that it needs admin access.

...

because they were "teached" to reboot every day and reinstall every 4-6 months and think this is normal.

Pure horseshit. Availability of quality help is uncomparably higher for GNU/Linux. btw, stop calling GNU/Linux just Linux, the latter is a kernel which is used for example in Android as well and you don't call it Linux.

...

You go and cut your nipples with a chainsaw.

I ran stuff from FreeBSD, Void, Arch to ezpz level distros such as Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE on my . OpenSUSE is mostly reasonable (except systemd).

What if I told you that IOMMU can really easily fuck up your Btrfs, EXT4, you name it, whatever Leenux partition you're using? What if I told you that GPU driver support on open-source drivers sucks dicks and proprietary drivers sucks even worse on AMD? I won't even get to NVidia.

The original article sucks dicks, but not on this point. Yes, trying to have a good Linux system implies getting around to having compatible shit to make it work.

FreeBSD might be a project for autists, but boy, at least it makes some_fucking_sense, in comparison to the retardation Linux people do.

You are not autists, you are retard weaboos who masturbate to the image of your 10 ton ex.

Good fucking post.

Proof? Especially ext4, since btrfs is unstable as fuck anyway.
No problems with RadeonSI here.

Why do you feel the need to prove anything to this pathetic troll? I bet he's running hardened gentoo on a librebooted thinkpad and is laughing behind the monitor right now. Fucking summer newfags taking lq baits

kek

...

GNU/Linux.

GNU/Linux is the dark and shameful past, NSA/Windows is the future my man.

I have to admit I use IrfanView quite a bit on Windows when I need to quickly crop or scale an image, and don't want to spend 15 seconds just loading GIMP up. Does GNU have an equivalent program?

In the past, when I still was a manchild for playing video games, I made EVE Online and Starcraft 2 run perfectly with WINE.
What else do you want to run? Assasin's creed? Battlefield or COD? If it's the case, just stay with windows and get as far as you can of any technology.

Wine isn't a sandbox if you install botnet you get botnet.
Implying that it's wine fault and not the software that was developed to only work on one monopolistic platform.
WEW nice argument, please continue will I use gentoo.
If you value the “everything works” just KYS

For people who ate play-do when they were kids.

That's because you're a fag that doesn't know how to make support for people.
That's because you just want "it just works" without understanding it.

Reinstall it.

It's because of people liek you that the tech world is going to shit.

Implying religion

You mean that EA who's going to have a 2000% investment return can't spare a few dimes to develop for another platform, besides consoles ?

It isn't, steam is infecting the free software world with botnet.
And users who are retarded enough to add botnet are just asking for another windows.

Weird, isn't it. Getting GNU working with X has to be GNU's effort, since X doesn't want to make it work on GNU.
But still it's GNU's fault for X not working with GNU even tho GNU isn't the one who has access to the build process of official releases of the X software/hardware.
X is the only one who has legitimate access to all the information necessary to make it work simply. But failure is someone else's fault...

For poo brain people yes.

Windows either
All software is never finished.
Then again don't use it.
Or if you ask for services from tech don't impose your retarded methods when we say they are.

Lets be honest here 99% of windows users doesn't know WTF is happening or what are the functions in the OS.

If you’re the type of user who likes to press the power button and have everything just work smoothly and without hiccups, you should not use a computer.

If you are a normal person who knows how to read, you’ll probably have control of your computer. It give you freedom in many ways.

Why do you think most Windows users would make the switch?

The last thing I want in Linux from the windowsverse is a carbon copy of OneNote, specially for handwritten notes.
No, I'm not gonna learn to love xml dropdown menu note-taking, I just wanna have fucking "pages" for my doodles organized in "notebooks".

Try CherryTree. No handwriting though.

The last thing I want in Linux from the windowsverse is an easy to use, two-way application firewall, with the ability to simply toggle rules when needed.
