Here's my personal theory about it.
Imagine that the US is a pride of lions on the savanna. All the male lions, especially the larger and more dominant ones, are fighting for the top of the biggest rock in their domain, in a big patch of sun, so they can stretch out and warm themselves. The strongest lion wins, naturally, and gets the rock, and (being strongest) becomes head of the pride. Of course, the weaker lions, the less brave, the females, can't compete for the top of the rock, and they know it. They're not fit to lead. So all they can do is moan and sulk on the sidelines.
Now let's say a pack of hyenas descends upon the lions, tired of being bumped around from pride to pride, and they manage to confuse the male lions. They're led into a big war with another pride, or the hyenas manage to gather up the weaklings and chase the strong out, or whatever, and they're so tuckered from fighting that the hyenas can drag away all their food.
Now, there's nobody fighting to be on top of the rock. The strongest, the fittest, have been rused and weakened. And the weak lions and the females start to inch toward the rock, cautiously at first. What if the strong lions come back and put them in their place? But eventually, they abandon everything, and swarm over the rock all at once. There's no competition. No leader. Nothing gets done. The natural law has been upended and violated like a German girl on New Year's Eve. But the weak lions and the females don't care, because they finally showed those strong lions who was boss.
That's why these people smirk. They know, deep down, that they're debased and subhuman. They know that in the natural order, some rational man would slap them into submission, as has happened countless times in history. But now, they think, they somehow run the world, and they're gloating. They're saying: They think this is just the way things are now, and the rule of the strongest and the fittest has been swept into the dustbin of history. But I'm sure everyone on Holla Forums knows what the lion eventually does.
