You should buy a cheaper weapon chambered in a common cartridge for your first gun. For rifles, an AR-15 patterned guns are very common these days as is 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington ammunition. Note that a gun chambered in 5.56 NATO or 5.56 Wylde can chamber both 5.56 and .223. Some gun chambered in .223 are not capable of firing 5.56 NATO
If you live in a poz zone like NY or CA, then a Ruger Mini-14 is also a good weapon as it also shoots 5.56/.223 from a detachable box mag but isn't considered an "assault weapon" in those states. Avoid the older, pencil-barreled versions of the Mini-14 if possible. The thin barrel can adversely affect accuracy.
Leverguns and bolt-actions are also viable in poz zones, if you don't want to deal with the hassle of semi-autos. That said, they'll still have imposed maximum magazine capacities because of poz zone laws.
Slavshit is good if chambered in 7.62x39 due to ammo availability. This even applies to poz zones, thanks to the SKS. Nuggets are good bolt actions, but their 7.62x54r cartridge can be hard to find at times.

Shotguns are best in 12ga flavor, with the Mossberg 500 or pre-2007 Remington 870 being excellent choices. Shotguns don't really have "assault weapon" laws like semi-auto rifles do, though they are also subject to capacity laws.

Handguns are the most finicky class of firearms - save for those evil, baby-killing, black assault weapons - to acquire in some areas of the country. 9mm is a good chambering for the beginner due to ease of use, variety, inexpensiveness, and availability.
Glocks despite the glocknade meme are good quality guns for a reasonable price if you're not a poorfag. They also come with 20+ round magazines not applicable to poz zones, you'll get one pinned at 10
Revolvers are a good choice in poz zones..357 is a good, common revolver cartridge, considering that it can also accept .38 special. That said, reloading under fire is something not easily done with a revolver, even with speed loaders.

The Ruger Gunsite Scout is the best bet for a bolt .308, it's got a big ass 10 Rd box mag and a scout style scope mount so it's usable in close quarters. I personally am sticking to 30-06 guns, I have a shitload of ammo and it's unmatched in availability/power. No plate carrier in widespread use is gonna stop 180 grains of copper and lead coming at 2500+ fps
