shitty videogames.

Computers

Taking shit apart since i was a wew lad, developed into an obsession then taper off into something not as much.

wee lad*

...

I downloaded widnows 8, and windows 8 downloaded 50 updates and windows 10.

So i downloaded ubuntu, and now im running debian with win7+my old games in a vm w/ gpu passthrough. Im pretty happy with my setup, tbh.

Also what this guy said

I like to make stuff, but I'm too cheap to buy building material, so computers where you build stuff using only text files are a perfect match for me.

this

Being a complete loser somewhat forced me into it.

I just want to see the breakthrough of using libre hardware in the tech industry. That's all.

Computers are the adult's Lego/Meccano.

I want to play Pied Piper with useful idiots

Basically this. The prerequisite was no social life and autism, of course. Also the cancer surrounding Windows 8+ made me switch quickly for good.

Since the first day I got to finally own my own computer I have been obsessed with tweaking, cutting out unnecessary resource use, getting the most out of my hardware, and generally learning the ins and outs of software. Then Windows Vista and Office 2007 came out, and I had to go deeper.

halfchan dying

The BOFH.

I regret nothing.

Freedom.
I know, according the the world's affairs, that we are heading to the most dystopian society ever.
I'm here because I want freedom.

To achieve this freedom, there is two solution: either you throw everything related to a computer, or you build your path through them.
Since it's mostly impossible to simply get out of anything related to computing (today it's possible, but in the future, that's not. When the unique market will be created, upon a unique cryptocurrency, to even buy an apple, you'll need a computer).
So I'm trying the second path.

The actual fuck? Walmart is currently the largest retailer (and company in general). Whoever made that powerpoint slide did jack shit research

freedom and privacy. so, windows 10. windows 7 will die someday and it seemed smarter to just switch to linux now and learn how to do it.
Though I was also drawn to it because of something else I note: the autists are always right. The people who actually give a shit about some subject really do usually have the best opinions on it. the things they like are actually interesting, beautiful, well made, etc. the people who seemed to really care and take interest in Holla Forums seemed to mostly reccomend gnu or bsd, bsd being better in the ways that matter, but linux being more practical, supporting more commonly used software and such.

Just a simple search invalidate what you say.

A combination. Tech is really my second love (classical music will always be my first). My father is involved in technology and some of my earliest memories are helping him build my first computer back in the Win 9x days. He actually introduced me to GNU/Linux, too. He had one of those computers with a swappable drive bay and had Red Hat on one of his disks. Later on he showed me how to work virtual machines, where I started fucking around with Ubuntu and Fedora. From there, the rest came naturally. I played in VMs for a while until I finally got pissed off enough at windows to install it when updates were breaking my display literally every couple of hours.

On the other side is privacy. I think the first time I really took notice was in high school when I saw ads for shit I had browsed weeks before showing up all over websites completely unrelated. It bothered me enough to start looking into it. Finding imageboards with their sort of natural paranoid atmosphere just expedited the process.

You are a cianigger kike aren't you?

No.

You do realise these are datamining threads for the n-s0a000? They have these every so often on Holla Forums. Don't give them your information.

I appreciate the concern. I guess it just seems pretty innocuous to me. "why are you interested in technology" could just as easily be a legit question. It's not like any of this is personally identifiable.

Perhaps you're right though. I just wish there was a /comfy/ place to relax without this crap. Maybe one day.

I Saw It on the overboard.
I don't think i'll come back though because you all seem to be a bunch of freetards who don't understand that windows will always be better.

Don't let the door games hit you on the way out.

Video games such as SimCity, grew up and realized how tedious computer graphics programming was and how the video game industry is a giant sweatshop.

I still have it in my basement. Some day, I want to break it out and fix it up for old times sake.

This so much

do it today faggot

My parents' idea of parenting was paying the bills and doing nothing else other than being a pain in the ass.
Naturally by the time I became 18 I had probably already spent 8 years worth of hours on the computer.

I got my first computer when I was around 7 and I just dicked around on it for hours.

Holy shit.

...

being sheltered and poor and not being able afford to do anything else

I also grew up during the dot com bubble and everyone was getting emachines and internet back then.

i honestly wanted a dreamcast more than a PC since it could go on the internet and play games which is all i really wanted to do.

But my dad didn't want me playin games and he got me a shit pc instead even for its time. I still managed to get something running on it, and got into modding games and programming that lead me to being a neet.

I would of probably been better off socially and woulnd't have become a shut in if i went with the console route though.

Finding a fuckhuge and very comprehensive book about computers which can turn a total noob into a power user when I was 6 (my dad bought a PC when I was 4). Once per year I fucked the shit up, and our 1337 friend came to reinstall everything. At some point I stopped fucking up. Tried installing xubuntu when I was 13, got everyone mad because they weren't able to find photos (even when I told everyone that everything from windows is on separate partition), eventually I was forced to reinstall XP. Later I got sucked into ham radio and cyberpunk.

Not to mention that every toy I got was eventually disassembled, ~1/4 of them in an irreversible manner.

I haven't got any programmming or electronic experience despite those things really intriguing me, so I just lurk here and look up any term or subject that looks interesting and learn a bit about it.

What would that be?

got addicted

I got inspired about a month ago because of this forum. I also want to get out of my current industry (naval nuclear reactor operator) so I'm trying to learn as fast as i can now so im ready for EE/CS/CE degree when I get out.

runescape made me realise how good computer gaming graphics were

Something like "The modern encyclopedia of personal computers". It's probably not translated to any other languages than Russian, though.

Yeah, it's inconceivable that someone on a discussion board would ask people how they got into tech. It must be a government datamining operation. That's much more likely.

It was porn and piracy, I need better file system than ntfs or hfs, so I venture into GNU/loonix but linux do accelerate my hoarding and ricing autism.

Why would something inspire me to get into Holla Forums? As long as I can remember I've always enjoyed computers. It wasn't any intentional plan, it just was

Can someone at least fix the audio? It's an amazing webm, but that just bothers me.

My dad got me into using linux at a pretty young age, by dual booting linux onto my first computer, purely for SPINNAN CUBEZ.
Had used Ubuntu from 8.04 'till 12.10, which was around the time I got into minecraft, which got me into redstone, modding and finally a bit of programming.
Fun fact: I never ended up properly learning Java. I've always just hacked around aimlessly, and continue doing so to this day. Thankfully, I have at least 2 languages I know properly, now.

In the end, besides being comfy, I think what draws me to linux and programming in general is the sheer amount of power it grants me. Having grown up without really being able to take my own decisions and just having to roll with whatever others decided for me until I was finally 18 (and was kicked out), I think it was something I really needed to keep myself sane. At least, it'd explain why I run slackware with a ton of custom packages, and love writing assembly and OS-less programming in general. I can't get this amount of control in the real world.
