If you don't look ethnically Japanese, you will always remain a gaijin in Japan. It doesn't matter if you live there for 20 years while staying within Japanese culture and then attain citizenship (which is extremely difficult to attain), you will always be considered a gaijin.

You don't have to be accepted as 100% Japanese to live there and have friends and a family.

I agree that foreigners can have Japanese family and friends who love one another. I'm referring to the Japanese culture that is strongly xenophobic and group oriented. Looking like a non-Japanese automatically makes you a gaijin; it doesn't even matter if you were born in Japan to non-ethnically Japanese parents, you will always be considered a gaijin.
