So from that perspective I'm fine with voting for liberal Democrats, in another decade or two the Overton window will probably shift enough for some of them to come out in support of a basic income. I was just asking why you guys who are more traditionally communist (or anarchist) would have ever thought B████ and Hillary were substantially different in terms of advancing your goals.

Sure, but just as the wealthy tolerate (or simply do not have the political power to prevent) a significant amount of money going to things like medicare and welfare today, I think they would tolerate some of their taxes funding a basic income if the cost was not too high, especially if the alternative was huge masses of people unable to find work and desperate enough to turn to violence against the rich. Also, full automation where all mass-produced goods were made by machines (machines which could also replicate copies of themselves) should cause the price of any good produced by these machines to drop to little more than the cost of raw materials and energy the machines need to make them (I agree with Marx that in a market system, profit requires workers who get paid less than the value of the products they produce…that or a complete monopoly). So if all consumer goods were much cheaper, funding a materially comfortable basic income for everyone probably wouldn't require a particularly high tax rate on those who still do make money in the market (probably most remaining money-making would depend on intellectual property laws, as you suggested, or from services that can't be done by machines). Unlike a lot of the people here I don't see the continued existence of a market system as inherently bad, only some of its effects like poverty, wage-slavery, and destruction of the environment.

And I think that in the long term, if everyone had a comfortable basic income then the dominance of big corporations in the market would naturally diminish–for example, the reason most computer programmers are willing to do work for hire rather than form teams to just create and sell software products themselves is because they need a year-to-year salary, whereas the capitalists that pay them can afford to sink a bunch of money into a project that won't make a profit for years (note that in this case, the issue is usually *not* that the workers don't own the means of production–it may in fact be true that the programmers do all their work on computers they own themselves). If all programmers had a comfortable basic income I think you'd see a lot more software products where all the money made would go to the programmers who actually created it, and likewise the same could be true for a lot of other types of products, especially if it was cheaper to turn new designs into physical prototypes using manufacturing techniques that don't require ownership of giant factories, like 3D printing. So after enough time this system would probably evolve into something pretty close to a type of market socialism.
