It is possible that someone in NBC could have tipped Trump about the release of the video. There was nothing Trump could do to stop it. So instead of just standing around and waiting for video to be aired. Trump proactively leaked the video himself.

It was a huge gamble, largely predicated on Trump doing well on the debate. Trump delivered on the debate.
