There is a difference between living your life on the edge or doing something like riding a motorcycle without a helmet on. Logging in as root for basically any reason is more in second category. I can't imagine that he has any reason other than just not feeling like entering the password every once in a while.

I too run a quad core gaming machine with a totally real 1024x768 monitor

Linux -- the kernel only? You probably mean the GNU operating system. Since the term "Linux" is useful for its name recognition, a reasonable compromise is to call the system "GNU/Linux".

What are you, a brainlet? Install OpenBSD.

you mean that shitty outdated as fuck OS that you have to do literally everything for?
install Linux so you don't have to enter a bunch of info into a text file just to make wifi work.

Why not? Linux never got a Secure Attention Key so if someone pwns your user account they can just place fake su/sudo binaries for you to let them get into root. The "don't run as root" thing is security theater.

...

How exactly do you think wifi works? You think the TCP fairy knows exactly when to send and receive packets through and from the ether to your computer? That's defined in a text file you fucking ubuntu baby chimp nigger.

...

Well son, first PID1 parses the xml dbus service description file for networkmanager...

I personally recommend the MIT license to all my friends and so far they're using it. GPLv3 is a larp license for pajeets who can't code.

...

You can install a graphical network manager, brainlet.

Licensing doesn't matter in this case because OpenBSD will always be FLOSS.

Those are even worse. At least with the cli you can know what went wrong. Windows isn't better in this regard either.

Works On My Machine (TM)

You can claim that just like you could claim that wearing helmet on a motorcycle doesn't guarantee you won't die. That doesn't mean it isn't pants-on-backwards retarded to do.
Just because it is possible to exploit what you are talking about(which I believe because all software is vulnerable all the time), doesn't mean it is more likely, and not simply easier for people to abuse your computer when you are logged in as root.

Openbsd is nice but why are you still using firecuck? Switch to icecat or palemoon you faggot.

...

>very little (((redhat))) bloat and bullshit
Git gud.

...

GNU/Linux*

...

I've got both my laptop and desktop onto Fedora 26 with LXQt now; it's still a bit rough around the edges, but I love it. It's fairly minimalist like LXDE, but fresher, on a better framework (or at least one that I'm more familiar with, having personally worked with Qt but not GTK), and prettier.
My only real concern is a general 'nix one, which is that I still need to reinstall winblows somewhere for gayming purposes. Haven't done so yet, though, and my laptop's been linux only for years now. I probably won't actually bother getting it until some game I really want doesn't get a linux port, like that upcoming monster hunter.

why not public domain? mit is a fucking pain in the ass because you have to include the license in binaries

...

I don't know jack shit about linux, but I just want to say your desktops are really fucking cool looking.

If you want your desktop to be as awesome as ours, why not learn Linux?

I personally recommend BBC to all of my friends and so far they are using it. Monogamy is a larp arrangement for Alphas that can't be cucked.

Public domain is impossible in most countries unless the copyright holder has been dead for 70+ years. CC0 is the closest you can get to public domain but (for some resons) it's not recommended for software.

ftfy

closest you can get to public domain in the third world maybe

From a few days ago.

Debian Maitre Course here
Debian 9 GNU/Linux is awesome ! Too bad it contains Renard Poterie shitty software

yep, ubuntu babby detected

I want phoneposters to leave.

Is your life so pathetic that you check filenames to see if someone posted from a phone?

Sux to be you faggot

stupid nigger acts elitist after purposely misunderstanding the point of an user's post. news at 11.
they purposely make you have to do all the work just to have a way to get online so BSDcucks can continue being elitist faggots.

what's the point of a computer nowadays if not to get online? they have very basic support for wifi but you have to do all the work. it's not hard work but it shouldn't be work you have to do, fucking brainlet nigger

after I posted that screenshot I actually uninstalled Firefox because I was reading about Soros teaming up with Mozilla so I'm using SeaMonkey now.

If you think computers need graphical network managers to go online you aren't qualified to operate one.

use alt-sysrq-K, it kills everything on current tty so the login process is a legit one

systemdicks fuck off

Am I the only one who doesn't think Unity 7 is all that bad?

You're describing linux though

Thats not the case for ubuntu, even so, linux is freedom oriented OS and wireless connection is bit more complicated than generic ethernet. Linux will not spoon-feed you on everything, if you want then use Linux Mint/Ubuntu/PCLinuxOS.
really?

network{
ssid="network name"
psk="password"
}
bunch of info my shit

kys tbh

Why?

LGPL

well at least that color palate isnt as bad as the defaults.

This was already discussed in the Redox thread and it was already proved that MIT and other permissive were shit.

The reason is legal wording.
The creative common licenses are made for content (art, text etc...) not for code.

CC-SA would be the equivalent of the GPL, just saiyan.

It seems that you don't understand.
Legally speaking the WORDS used in the CC-SA and the GPL are very different, even if the goals are similar.
The CC-SA cannot replace the GPL because of that.
For example the CC-SA can't stop tivoization because the jurisdictional wording used in that specific case isn't included in the CC-SA.
Honestly I was seduced too by the MIT for it's simplicity a few years ago and I didin't want to spend hours and hours of reading very long licenses, in the end I did what I should have done from the beginning RTFL.
It's all legal/logical/illogical mumbo-jumbo and it takes time to understand it but it's worth it.

How many rice points do I get?

get at least one more monitor u pleb.

We have workspaces since CDE on UNIX, plebeian.

The only thing you need to understand the GPL is to read the preamble; it teaches the purpose and the proper way to interpret the license. The rest of the legalese is there for people who need more details than what's written in the preamble.

...

uh, thats linux. Linux also has workspaces.

I just came here to point out I fucking love how I can max out my hardware without locking up the operating system. It works so well I don't even notice it going on because everything is still perfectly smooth and responsive.
What is maxing out my CPU is portage and on make.conf I set portage's niceness to 19, if I open a game while portage is doing it's thing I don't even lose FPS because priorities work so beautifully.
Fuck windows.

why am I not surprised...

Way to be a faggot kid

1) Linux is a kernel.
2) GNU/Linux distributions don't have workspaces, WM do.
3) By UNIX, I (wrongly but understandably) meant POSIX compliant OSes.

Actually linux is an operating system and gnu is an animal.

The operating system as a whole is technically supposed to be called the GNU operating system. It comes from an old programming tradition of naming a new program by following three rules:
1) It must be a recursive acronym.
2) It must be a real word.
3) It gives attribution to its predecessor, if it has one.
The term GNU was coined in the early 1980s by Richard Stallman.
1) It's recursive: GNU stands for Gnu is Not Unix.
2) It's a real word: A gnu is a hairy bovine creature from Africa.
3) It gives attribution to the proprietary operating system that it was made to wipe from the face of the earth: Unix.
The operating system development began in 1984. In 1992, the operating system was nearly complete. The only missing piece was the kernel. Coincidentally, kid in Finland named Linus Torvalds was working on a kernel as a university project. He noticed that there was this operating system called GNU that was nearly complete -- all it needed was a kernel, and he happened to have a kernel, so he did the work of adding the final piece of the puzzle. His kernel is called Linux. The operating system is called GNU. Perversely, however, many people started referring to the entire operating system as "Linux", so the compromise is to call the system GNU/Linux or GNU+Linux.

that's the firefox logo you retard

Interdasting...

What kind of retard uses firefox on Linux? Oh wait, the same kind that uses ubuntu.

A-Am I cool yet?

Greetings fellow Debian users. Stable as a goat!

Fixed.

Tell me this is some Debian joke, please.

if i told you that you can actually install software beyond repositories, there are several .deb mirrors from both ubuntu and debian that provide cutting edge compiled .deb file

See .

Install libreboot and Debian.
You can thank me later.

You mean Coreboot and ME Cleaner. X200 is as far as Libreboot goes.

Windows' Not Unix!

Good catch user, I saw minifree post an x220 for sale a while back but it looks like they are still porting it as of a couple months ago.

SUperRare Linux coming thru

kill yourself it looks horrible

borderless windows are abysmal

What?

GPU Passthrough is the solution to everything that Linux is missing for normie faggots. I put all my non-repo/proprietary shit inside the VM.

Finally got everything setup on my t470. I got this thing for around 700$ on the lenovo outlet with a 35% of coupon I found online. I figured why the hell not. Runs very nicely even with gnome. I hadn't upgraded laptops since my T420. But sadly the motherboard busted and now the thing can no longer run on battery. It had to be plugged in at all times and I just said fuck it and bought a new lap because I had some extra money anyways.

my black man

my back man

got me a virtual machine

...

I don't why they even contribute here.

This is a Windows-friendly board, no bully

Devuan stronk

So I'll just enter a bunch of text into a file to make wifi work, so that I can install a network manager.. unless I'm meant to build one myself?

Running applications as root opens you to a lot more vulnerabilities, specially if the applications have network capabilities. Whether you can escalate to root privileges from a user account is a different story.

no, Holla Forums is a windows-friendly board
now fuck off >>>Holla Forums

dumb frogposter

FreeBSD on the memepad

Love that wallpaper

What are you smoking, kid?

My hardware is shit.

Why so much empty space between windows? It's ineffective for work.

...

your desktop is also shit

o-yo-yoy

You are shit
My desktop has loli on it.

that's the only good thing about your desktop
here's what you should fix
and if you can't make everything agree with your wallpaper, use a different wallpaper

I turned it on just before taking the screenshot.
The second bar is tmux's window list. Having 2 bars is ok.
Please explain.

Name one reason it sucks that isn't that one time years ago with the SSL bullshit.

openbsd is too insecure for a desktop

No it is not. On the front page right now is a discussion about it, and no evidence has been provided for OpenBSD being insecure except that ports have the potential to be insecure.

God, it took me one full minute to understand. Good taste isn't limited to music.

Linux thread? Am I invited?

Lemme get my router and my landline-phone in on this action.

...

lol maybe I'll try BSD next time

It's released? I almost forgot about it.

Lunix is not a technology, it is a political ideology. Discussions of Lunix are overwhelmingly political and rarely informed by attention to the software engineering practices, facts and theories that are normally of interest to Microsoft programmers. The differing "versions" of Lunix are distinguished by the sectarian politics of their adherents and the internal theological disputes (eg, Open vs. Free) those adherents entertain between updates to porn sites. The BSD versions of Lunix permit capitalism in their license and are therefore known as libertarian instead of communist distributions.
