We aren't a very happy or positive generation. Rappers (in my country at least, I don't listen to rap from the US) talk about failure, how meaningless everything is. Memes are not so funny or relatable anymore, they talk about suicide and depression. I get the feeling that it was second degree in the first place, but then this tendency became overwhelming that we may have started to relate to it. People always take extreme position and they tend to be more and more extreme, even in real life, not only on the internet. Of course, since everyone is anonymous on the Internet, it's even more extreme here. Few people try to understand each other. On one side people are horrible "white privileged people", "fascists" and on the other side they are "sjw trash", "retarded leftists" and so on.
So, I don't know if it is true, but I feel our generation is less and less happy. But if you think about it, we live in a good period. We have the Internet, you can exchange with people from all over the world, culture and knowledge have never been so accessible, our life standards have never been this high, etc… Sure we have some problems, the environment, the inequality of wealth distribution. But those problems are problems that have always existed, if not in the same form, the outcome still existed. (The problem with the environment is we are all gonna die, the issue with the cold war and the arms race was the same).
If you compare this to how people felt in the decades after WWII, it seems they were feeling better, they were generaly happier, even though they also had problems. And this happiness lasted until the beginning of our decade, at least that's where I would locate that.
What I think is that this generation of people went through the darkest times, they had a traumatism that they passed to their children, our parents. So when the war was over, even if they were problems, life was enjoyable, it was safer, peaceful. We don't have this traumatism, we never really went through hard times and we forgot what are actually hard times. Therefore, we don't see what makes life good anymore, we only see what's negative.
What do you think ? (((datamining))) Do you think this generation needs to have a hard times to truly enjoy life again ? (((datamining))) Or can this general feeling of sadness and lack of enjoyment for life be explained otherwise ? (((datamining)))
