According to news reports, a pro-refugee mayor on Oersdorf, Germany was beaten by an unknown assailant with a club. The media has attributed the attack to "xeonophobic" elements, since the mayor was proceeding with refugee intake despite protests from the community.
Apparently, the attacker got lucky when the mayor left an area of police protection to retrieve something from his car. I'm never sure the police's views in these cases. Maybe somebody suggested to the police that they not follow the guy, should he get up to leave?
How unfortunate that German politicians should be made to experience the same threats to their personal safety as the average citizen living in the towns they manage.
