Right now the Russians are deploying S-300V4 (the land army version, older than the S-400 they have already deployed but optimized to counter tactical/cruise missiles more while air force version is more for planes).
Basically they know the US can't strike Assad's troops without getting shot down, nothing that could actually slip in (F-22, mass wild weasel raid, etc…) is actually deployed near Syria.
So that leave only one option, mass tactical missile strike which the US can certainly do, followed up by airstrikes (because Russians assets aren't that numerous, they will simply run out of ammo shooting down 100+ tomahawks).
The problem is the various ships, subs and coastal defenses off the Syrian coast (and there is an entire Russian strike force there, I haven't kept track of all of them but there should be at least two of the new black sea frigates and at least one Slava-class cruiser, the Kirov-class and the Kuznetov aircraft carrier and their destroyers are still underway I think) they won't know whether the cruise missile are for them, for Russian troops and assets on the ground, etc… nor will they have time to check with the Kremlin what to do, meaning whoever is in charge will have to take the following decision:
- watch helplessly as a rain of cruise missile kills Russians soldiers you're there to protect and/or possibly your ships.
- launch a counter-strike to silence the US ships.
There is no version of this that ends well.
