I never understood the "season 1 is way better argument". Season 2 adds more character complexity in a subtle way, like Morty becoming violent in the purge or Rick caring for Morty, even when that was shown in season 1 as well. It didn't lose a lot of it's charm in the transition except for taking itself a little more serious. My favorite episodes are in seson 2, like the miniverse battery one.

Only problem with season 2 is way too many episodes side sotires focused on Morty's parents, but that also happened in season 1. At the end, taking this serie serious is idiotic, that's why I want a funny ending like the one in season 1.

And you still got them. Character development didn't get on the way of the show gimmicks. In fact, it's often used as plot device, like the Purge episode, it0s by the end that Rick mentions Morty's outburst is because of something on the candy, while the candy wrap shows that that component isn't on it anymore, you have a shitty The Purge rip off where only the ending counts as character development, and even Rick mentions it. You also have that episode where time fragments, Rick is only willing to sacrifice for Morty there, and only one part of his times, and at the end he doesn't even remember. You see little parts where Rick actually cares for Morty, once in season 1 and a bunch of times in season 2, but they're all subtle. Then you have the worst episode of all, the shit episode with the floating heads, where Morty meets Birdperson by chance.

I don't see the social commentary, and ironically enough, when there are social commentaries it have nothing to do with character development, like the episode where Rick goes with Summer to that women planet. The only character development there is showing that Summer is jealous of Morty's relationship with Rick, and that's what lead to everything else, and all the satire and gimmicks go it's way without even caring for any of their feelings or any other bullshit.

If you put it that way, then I agree. It's like Draw Together last episode, where they just lose their jobs and go away.

It's not like I particularly care for character development, my point i that character development doesn't interfere with the show's satire and humor in general. It's not like I consider every little interaction be character development like some autistic fanbase, but there are things that seem intentional like Rick holding Morty as a baby.

Also, the show have some continuity, In season 1 after Rick and Morty fucks the whole world they replace the other Rick and Morty from a dimension where they die, and they bury them, and Morty uses that to convince Summer of staying in the house, the first episode of season 2 is a direct continuation of the end of season 1, but honestly, that's about it.

Its not character development of the characters don't develop. Its a waste of time. Moments meant to be "Cute" or "Emotional" loose all impact because next episode they act like assholes to each other once more.

Don't do emotional moments then except for satire. Thats what at least to me made Superjail entertaining. Really fun dynamic characters that are more like gods in their behaviour going around this playground being monstrous assholes.

Too many episodes focused on what a curayzee party animal Rick is. I like him a lot more when he's just an asshole Doc Brown.

Am I the only one who's glad about this yet at the same time can't say whether they really liked or really hated this show? Like the first half of the first season was fucking great because it played with your expectations of what the show was gonna do and made fun of the Doc and Marty relationship from BttF, but then they stopped having Sci-Fi adventures and just hop between planets and universes to entertain themselves and spout non sequiturs with other aliens. The second season has like two good episodes (the Tinyverse one and the one with the "hilarious sitcom family characters" leeches) and then it was back to aliens for the majority of it. And then they started pretending there was LORE to all of this and continuity and then it culminated in the shitty comics.

I have pretty much the same opinion, except I think that all episodes of the 1st season besides Melody ones are very good. Second season dropped the ball, picked it up with tinyverses, only to then completely jump the shark with "It's time to get schwifty." I dropped the show after that episode.

Season 2 dropped the portal gun for the space ship, so you have more space adventures than other dimensional adventures.In the first season you're able to see weird shit because they used to travel between universes more often, while season 2 have more aliens on it. The first episode where time breaks is also pretty good. The lowest point is the talking heads episode, and that episode set the bar so low, it's kind of hard to point which one was bad at all. If the story about the family is better than the adventures of rick and morty, then it's a shit with one exception.

You can have character development without affecting the character permanently. In this case character development is only used for things that might happen later or already happened but that aren't important, like small facts about the characters. If you scarred your character with development, specially little and vague, in this kind of shows you'd end up with Adventure Time, and nobody wants that.

The problem as I see it though is that in the first season they had actual SciFi spoof adventures. They travel into dream dimensions, they create a race of mentally superior dogs, generate a thousand of self destructing clones and fuck up the genes of everyone in the world just to make a love potion. The second season is just "movie plot, but with aliens and alternate dimensions". In the episode with the fucked up genetics Rick claims they've got just another few tries at jumping universes to solve their problems, but they just go to town with it after that episode.

And in my opinion this show should have just gone with the no character development route. Would have made for funnier episodes and more cynic remarks like Rick denying knowing of the bully's death in the pilot.

I think that more than character development, is continuity. Shit matter now, instead of just resetting itself. Also, character development would make remarks extra cynical, like saying Rick have no feelings when he clearly does.

The other part of the story with Morty Jr. shows you that they aren't necessarily violent and stupid, in fact, if you put the 2 stories together, it's the women fault that men are violent and stupid in the first place.

The only three things that arguably changed permanently are Rick not being as much of a misanthrope as he used to against Summer's strong female character's gimmick, Jerry going from house-husband with a shitty job to a jobless nu-male loser constantly shat on even when he's doing nothing and Morty getting increasingly more like Rick in everything but conscience. And of these, only the last one is any "good" in terms of the writing, since it allows you to see the kind of emotional damage Rick leaves on those who care for him.

I've got no problems with shows being touchy feely, but when you establish a show with a humor focus it's going to be rare to pull it off.

It tried wAy too hard to be Morel Orel too hard and too fast, and the only reason MO worked was because of competent writing. Judging by the steady forcing of sjw'isms and plots turning into "because reasons" there was way too little of experience to pull that off, so they should had stuck to Season 1's writing style and just stuck primarily to humor like most AS shows.

There's an issue of the comic version of this shit that is exactly that plot, Jerry becomes Summer and they both realize that the other is a shitty character and they'd have fit the other's stereotype better. Jerry realizes that all Summer's friends do is shit with their phones instead of enjoying their youth, so he gets them on a wood trip, while Summer just un-cucks Jerry's body by having a serious talk with her mother/wife. It's more interesting than whatever the fuck the other two are doing to be honest.

The only way you can make him interesting to the audience is to change the character, but people prefer characters who are promising at first who develop into something more entertaining. Rick's antics made him watchable, but now he's pretty much an old sad rebel.
