Italians don't give a flying fuck about the rest of the world. As far as they're concerned the rest of the world doesn't even exist. Heck, they don't even give a damn about Italy - except when the national team plays soccer and when the Alpine troops gather the 1st weekend of May in some random Italian city.

Apart from that, Romans think Rome is and always will be the centre of the world, for Venetians it's Venice, for Turin, Milan, Florence the same goes. Italians don't care about something that doesn't exist, like America. As an American you may feel offended, but neither you or your country exist in Italy. Neither does Europe, the EU, Russia or any other global concept. None of them speak English. They don't care about the hordes of tourists from China, Germany or the Netherlands. They care about their own regional cheese, because that cheese is best cheese. Nobody can make cheese like that, even though they never tried anything else.
