It certainly isn't remotely reasonable to assume that it means you're protesting democracy or voting for the status quo. People won't vote because they assume everyone is already voting their way and have better things to do, work to be at, children to feed, etc. They don't vote because they're women, elderly or teenagers and know it's only of the man of the household who should be getting involved. They don't vote because they just don't have the resources to easily do it.

Not really, all Orban wanted was to check how many of his own people actually wanted to take the shitskins out of the country, no law was going to be passed anyway. What he found out is actually important to his reign:
1) Leftists have acknowledged they would not have won the vote at all, so they campaigned to stay at home. This helps him both in the short run (with his kebab blockade) and the long run (keeping his party in power) because it shows that the numbers of people supporting him is so high that the left simply cannot compete.
2) 45% is a huge voter turnout for an ex-commie country. People are getting involved politically and practically, something that is not directly happening in other Eastern Europe states (only other one I can think of is Poland)
3) It terrified the living shit out of the EU. Everyone's chanting "victory" over this referendum, but it's basically the first of many to follow in most of Eastern Europe and, worryingly for the (((Union))), some discontent Western ones as well (i.e. the Netherlands, Italy and Austria). 95% is a pretty telling sign of which way the pendulum's swinging, hence (((media))) is pushing the narrative that the whole of people who didn't go to the election are anti-nationalism / pro-globalisation instead of being about 30% anti-Orban and a measly 20% leftist.

We tried to be neutral - and it failed. We tried to build a coalition/commonwealth and it also failed. In Poland we don't care about left/right socialism/conservatism. We care only how to stay independant. Germans lost their teeth after Prussia was earased from existance, so alliance with them is safe (at least for now). We don't have any ilusions of greatness (not anymore). We only do know, that in order to survive, we need a strong patron in the west. Ukrainians came to the same conclusions after Crimea.
