He also had the ability to increase his power level through a transformation which sacrificed his beauty, making him a good last line of defence before the Ginyu force got called in.

In short, Zarbon was a good fighter, a loyal enough officer, competent adviser and a handsome counterweight to Dodoria's ugliness. He knew how to feed Frieza's paranoia and always received favour over Dodoria.
