More I think about this shit, I do wonder if Jeph actually reads his own comic.
Like, does he actually lay it all out in a flowchart or the likes, checking the progression and how well it all ties together, if the buildups have satisfactory payoffs and if the tension is just right to provoke the intended emotional response…
Or does he only remember the past couple of strips then just write any old shite that pops into his head.
The recent developments, for example; I get the feeling that he's fallen for his own bullshit.
He doesn't know why Menstro would be so upset about losing those memories, and has probably forgotten it asked for them to be sealed away in the first place, but the past couple of strips show that everyone is really sad about this so that's all the backstory he needs for the next strip.
I'm actually finding it difficult to articulate just how fucked up all of this is; none of it makes any sense…
Menstro's really upset at losing those memories.
It doesn't know what those memories were, so we'll just assume they were really precious because it's more dramatic that way.
It asked for them to be sealed away an indeterminate length of time ago, possibly years.
Yet Menstro's only upset about it, now…
Pinkbot was using all this for leverage?
Leverage to do what, exactly?
As established earlier, all robots in the fighting circuit are consenting.
And even then this is assuming that Pink fabricated the memory of asking them to be sealed up in the first place; not that Menstro specifically asked to seal them away.
So the situation is either:
"Please lock up sections of my mind so you can use it against me."
"Do what I say, or I won't tell you what's inside this mystery box. It's really important to you - you'll just have to take my word on that."
And this talk of "blackmail" that keeps flying around. I don't think the fans know what "blackmail" actually implies - Menstro has never been made to do anything it would object to. Shit, has it ever been told to actually *do anything*?
Again, Pink's bad just because.
And it wouldn't take much to actually make Pink seem more like a badguy.
A bit of dialogue like this would help:
"Oh, and Menstro? You're scheduled to fight Punchbot next week. Its manager hasn't given me my cut for the past month so I want you to smash its head enough to crack the core processor. We'll say it was the result of metal fatigue and poor maintenance on his part, but he'll get the message."
