My longest china train ride was from Shenzhen to Shanghai. I was in a similar situation but not as bad, since the eastern part of china was much richer. Didn't have people smoking, and it wasn't as crammed. However, there were people who were laying out newspaper and sleep UNDER our seats.

On another note, the newer "bullet train" style trains are pretty good. If you're going from one metropolis to another, and you're willing to pay like $20 USD more, you can have a much better time.
