Think about it. Each one of them grew up being repeatedly terrorized by their own families, and had much of that same terror shoved down their throats while away at school. They're taught that they're pariahs who have to be in a constant state of vigilance, because, even though the goyim are calm now, they can turn at any moment. The threat of another pogrom or Holocaust is always lurking somewhere in their mind.
That's not a healthy mindset.
It's no wonder then that when they pick up even the slightest whiff that something might be anti-semetic that they behave so neurotically. It's the thing they've all been waiting for: the justification for all their irrational paranoia. So, emboldened by their discovery, they hoot and holler all the more loudly. They suddenly have license to enact more and more extreme tactics to eliminate the threat that they've imagined, and by taking such actions they manifest the very anti-semitism they're trying to stave off.
Their more mild actions will be perceived along the lines of "thou dost protest too much", instilling unease and distrust among people who would have otherwise remained pleasantly aloof. However, with the way populations work, it's only a matter of time until one particularly radical Zealot or some particularly corrupt politician commits an offense against the nation within which the Jews live.
These individuals inspire scorn and hatred, which is interpreted as anti-semitism, thereby continuing the feedback loop. Each revolution of the cycle, the violence heats up a little more and the Jewish community becomes more isolated from those around them.
