That reminds me that I still need to finish my design brainstorming for a character I'm working on.

...

...

I can't show a picture because my printer/scanner is broken. I drew a lot of monsters as a kid and wanted to draw my own. But my fear was that it resembled Godzilla too much and would be seen as a rip off. Anyone else have that problem for characters they draw?

it's normal. It's impossible to be completely original in art today, but you can strive to be as original as you can. To avoid succumbing to fad and try to think outside the box and to improve and research an idea be it already existing or your own.

Thanks user. I was considering making him more of a swamp monster so he still has the basic godzilla design but he has these hair like feathers growing on his back that look like moss and are wet and sagging.

So the Swamp Thing ripoff then.
Relax, faggot. Copy what you want but experiment with it too. Try altering different parts, adding new stuff and see what works and make it your own over time.

No I don't mean like a swamp thing rip off. I mean like he's a dinosaur like monster that lives in a swamp. Here's pic related to better illustrate what I mean.

Do you guys have any good resources, like books or videos, for character design, specifically for animation?

Most stuff I've come across are on the same level as those crappy "how to draw manga" books or don't go into into much details.

I have a "How to draw the Marvel way" book I got as a kid that teaches the basics of drawing people and what not. Also, this book of how to draw dragons I got as a kid. Honestly I'd suggest to go find a book that teaches the basics. Here's a youtube channel if that helps. youtube.com/channel/UCLViOaV_TMX1DL3mc-giHVg

To be fair you can throw a lot of swamp junk onto a heap and you can call it Swamp Thing if you want to.

Doesn't quite fit under character design but here's two of my characters. It's meant to be a laser pointer.

This is the big one.

I could upload more to our Volafile room if you like.

...

Sounds interesting, got a title for that?

I already have the animator survivor kit. Good for animation, not so much for character design.
Please do, it will be an enormous help.

Just so I can contribute to the thread, this video may be helpful.

Your artstyle reminds me of Twelve Forever

Why does this happen? I've seen more and more boards/places do this.

I'm not complaining though, it's just interesting.

Actually, I'll just link this guy's stash and you can rummage.
floobynooby.com/pdfs/

For the love of god put up a censor pic before your post this shit you sicko.

Autistic retards only want porn, and the moderators on Holla Forums are a bunch of limp dick idiots who can't comprehend the concept of deleting low value posts

Newfags have no comprehension of rules here.

Unless you were here before the first exodus, I've been here longer than you.

Holla Forums has too many boards to remember which ones need what spoilered, plus the image is kind of ambiguous on that to begin with.

You're an idiot, also there's boobs in the pic, instant spoiler material.

Dumbass

I know that nudity isn't allowed, but not like a sick fuck like you would listen.

this.

The hell is that supposed to be?

Did that show ever get picked up? It seemed like it had potential.

Yeah its called Dragonart : How to draw fantastic dragons and fantasy creaturs by Jessica Peffer aka J "NeonDragon" Peffer.

Too bad

The hell is that? Looks like you traced a dragon.

Holla Forums is shit, I'm not a deranged autist who faps to prepubescent cartoon girl feet for the majority of my day so I have no reason to come here, except for the occasional thread every several weeks where something actually interesting happens that's posted on this shit board just because it has the legacy board name and thus steals all of the traffic for this topic.

Then leave if you hate this place so much, no one is forcing you to stay.

What do you expect? Traced from a veiny dick or something?

Weak bait mate, 4/10 go back to troll school.

Dragon Man, from the Fantastic Four?

Im not the original poster

Yes, nice eye user.

...

Nice so far

Nice work, fam.

Reminds me of the Goon mixed with some Popeye

Is this Mister Magoo?

Feet are so 2015, it's all about the armpit hair now

Bump.

A cape villain who uses genetically altered spiders.
They can bite with various poisons, truth serums, paralytics etc.

Also he can speak to them, because he can.
Animal themed villains are always the best.

Eh

Sounds interesting but it sounds familiar and im not talking about Peter either.

...

What's the story behind her?

She's a fuckin cunt, m8.

Yeah, I can't help but think I've seen it before, but I still like the idea.

For some reason I get the feeling she has goat feet. Maybe its the way she's hunched over and the position of her legs. Still good design maybe just work on the anatomy a bit more.

Just expand on it a bit, maybe change the setting.

Yeah but who is she?

Just add some feet and you're good.

She's a fuckin' throwaway cunt. That's her story.

So what's his thing then? He looks like the Toxic Avenger turned into a cyborg.

Gaz?

Looks like an orc

Or that Cyber Demon from Doom

She looks nice though her legs need fixing. What is her story?

That looks cool, fam.

You know how most Swedish women are crazy feminists? I drew that as mockery standing represent everything they hate. She also gets raped a lot

I see that crotch mound.

It's a girl, fellas.

Now that is really fucking edgy.

>>>/4chan/

...

Rough sketch of another character.

Huh yeah I sorta see it. Thanks.

Not bad

Thanks!

Just fix the face

Doom reference?

That's the idea

Is there something wrong with commissioning concept work of an idea that you're not sure if you'll actually do?

Depends. Can you afford to waste the money?

Yes easily since most sketch or black n white rates are in the 20s - 40s range

Then do it. Nothing lost, and if you ain't gonna do it, nothing gained

Man…I need some help/opinions on some designs. Problem is they're anthro animals. I don't think it's possible to get any decent/serious advice on the furry board. My issue is not giving them Disney style faces BUT still having a range of expression. I'm stuck. So is furry a deal breaker to post here?

Post it, ya furfaggot. If it's good it's good, if it's bad, it's bad, regardless of its degeneracy. Besides, Holla Forums's the fucking birth of many furfags.

some early rough sketches for a comic I'm doing about getting /fit/ in space.

Rule34 of that cat thing when?

also, another thing I'm trying to consider is if I want to go the inking route, or something that only uses color similar to Samurai Jack or the Chamba's art…

...

Well the artstyle makes me think more of Osamu Tezuka. Still looks good user. Does he train in more intense gravity to get buff?

Actually, it's more John Carter style where he is inherently op in the new universe so he has to go to extremes to get strong. By the time he's in his fit design I want the action to be pretty over the top with a bit of a Fantastic Four family theme going on in the background.

Pretty simple concept, but for a first project I figure it'll be fun.

So what's going on here?

The hell is wrong with his face.

Has "edgy" not ever meant "correct"?

figured I'd post the style it might be in, but I don't know if I like how I do the "no lines" look. It sort of looks like old microsoft clipart.

What program is that?

TVpaint, good for traditional animation and animatics.

Free to a good home.

...

Explain in detail what looks off? Unless you are talking about his disfigurement.

Some other unfinished and flawed character shit.

The way you draw faces just doesn't sit well for me. Could be a thing of taste.

Is the eyes, nose shape, head shape? I know I do have an issue with head shape and chins if that's what's up.

Well you fucked up. Animals obviously can't be anthropologists.

The entire head bothers me

You done fucked up user

What would you do to fix/improve it? Pics would be good.

...

Nice, are they studies.

all mine, all imagination

It just looks off, like its purposely made to look ugly.

That there is talent.

You know what? The nose or ears are too big

Man, that's pretty inspiring. Makes me want to learn my muscles even more.

learn form and structure first. no need for knowing muscles if you cant place them properly

Thanks for the tips. I'm using Hampton's constructive anatomy handbook, but I'm not very honest when it comes to muscle placement due to lack of knowledge.

bridgemans constructive anatomy and anatomy for sculptors by zarins uldis are pretty great, you should check em out

This

Thanks

if you wanna talk art or smthn you can add me on discord koz#1088

Wasn't trying too, I'm just very messy with line art.

The character is kinda unkempt mentally at this period so it shows in her appearance and attitude.

Yeah I can see the ear issue, I'm inconsistent with ears. She does have a larger nose so I don't really know how I can get around that. A lot of my characters for a while sorta looked the same face wise so I'm trying to add a bit of difference.

A work doodle.

They shrunk.

So I posted in the OC thread before with my character's beginning stages of at least a face design. My original sketch on the left and another user's rendition on the right. I'm not a very skillful drawer and am just barely making the effort to enhance my skills. I would at least like advice on where to take the idea for the rest of the character's design. The idea is that he's a monstrous almost alien looking creature abandoned by human parents and raised by a nomadic bestial race. So I want his design to be almost otherworldly and bestial while retaining a human like facial appearance to throw off his look and attitude. I'm open to ideas for designs and tips on drawing bodies.

The best realisation of that kind of uncanny-valley effect outside of Splice, that I've seen was Pickle, from Baki The Grappler.
He's a kind of proto-hominid that preyed on dinosaurs, he looks like a giant Michael Jackson with fangs, but then he does something like dislocate his skeleton to go into quadrupedal attack mode, or rape a reporter in the middle of a crowded airport, or body-check a meat truck, or rip an arm off an enemy and eat it, and you remember he's a sort of velociraptor in human skin.
And then he'll do something like praying for a fallen enemy, or get the giggles after copying an aikido trick, and he's back to being cute.

Might not go for something quite that gruesome but that's a start for ideas.

made the forehead too small

kurt

these are some redwall-ish designs that I've been working on.

finish your fuckin game nerd

For some reason that rifle reminds me of the battle rifle from Halo.

First off: Get some fundamentals if and build some confidence in your art.
Secondly: If you're going for an otherworldly and inhuman body, go full on inhuman, feral, and down to basics. That means quadrupedal or strange joint placements, a tail, anything that differentiates from humans.

I really do need to try and practice more. That means more general sketching. Just need the motivation to do it.
I'm thinking tail and some kind of animal legs. Don't know if I'd give him animal feet and human legs because that seems kind bland. But animal legs all the way could look weird too. Just have to keep testing ideas. I'm not sure if I should keep horns or not though.

generic lvl1 mutated zombie enemy

Supreme Leader Snoke?

who

This handsome fellow.

o damn nice design

That's really nice

...

Looks like a melting ballsack man.

it's whatever you want it to be man

Then that's the freakiest looking hamburger I've ever seen.

vranhurst

Makes me think of the Joker for some reason.

Sounds German.

ye, made his name to sound like that. glad to see that people notice

Nice again

The hell is wrong with his head?

you're like one of the people sayin shit like "he must be on drugs" whenever you see somethin slightly creative, arent ya

I think he's just wondering what the hell the idea even is with it.

the whole thing looks like its melting, so i dunno

sex cult priestess and another mutant from my vranhurst story thing idea

They're adorable. Got more?

Nic

*Nice

Nice mutant. Its design reminds me of STALKER's.
I wouldn't mind entering that cult either.

Game or character?

Game?

Just search by the name

...

checked

I've only started drawing for a year now, so the artwork might be amateurish. As for their stories, I haven't quite developed anything concrete yet, so i'll try and give a quick rundown on their backstories.

Vriluffs is an involuntary test subject selected for his meek, reserved nature in a twisted experiment to create a sentient, cuddly plaything. Despite his best efforts to avoid experimentation, his fight was ultimately in vain and he was modified regardless. As a result, Vril now has depression and feels disconnected with his current self. May or may not have suicidal tendencies.

A.L.I.S.E was an experimental neuron-powered robot sentry meant to replace normal human soldiers. As a result of a mind virus of sorts, a sizeable proportion of these robots have gone haywire and started a revolt, which was shortly thwarted by the normal bots. Their production has bottlenecked, and are now undergoing testing to prevent another surge in rebellion.

Slush is a sentient mass of pitch who is able to manipulate and absorb tar to grow in size, and is also able to change shape and form, is rumored to be capable of reanimating the dead. May or may not be inspired by Suu.

Some feedback would be nice.

...

What happens if I don't shut it?

What's its name

I don't know what that is, but I want it to sit on me. DOSE HIPS.

Neato design there, got any more of them?

Just another throwaway filler design, that I actually kinda liked enough to keep around. No name or nothin'

Not bad

HOT

I have to say, it looks a lot more well crafted and uh, livelier than my three characters. I've always wanted to do other body types and such.

Here's a little cutie i'm workan on.

You should probably practice gesture drawing for that. Look up Vilppu, Proko, etc.
In his first drawing , notice as well the various curves and asymmetry produced by the spine and the tilting of the shoulders and hips. Asymmetry is a good way to make figures interesting. Also, wide hips and teeth.

Not bad

Don't self deprecate yourself, your stuff has a certain charm to it, and it reminds me of myself a year ago. Even though your 3 characters all have pretty much the same body type, they make up for that with both their visual design and their premises. It's great that you're expanding your drawings on to other body types/styles though, and I say you should keep doing it. I do have one piece of advice for more "well crafted" characters though: think about why the characters look the way they look, have the things they have, and if you can, what visual hints about the character/personality can you provide just based on design (short sleeves vs long sleeves, red vs blue) alone. For example: "Why does plant lady have a personalized LCD eyepatch? Does its personification help it in any way?"
Just draw your characters in dynamic poses instead of just reference poses. Don't worry, I've fallen into this trap too. Practice with stick dudes, look at dynamic actions, do what said. Research, watch and study Looney Tunes, the Fleischer Superman cartoons and Spiderman comics for inspiration.
If you really wanna get good at drawing, you're gonna have to grind, and practice gesture and figure drawing with models and shit, as said.

if you have Skype, I'd recommend you add the anondraws account. You'll get an easier and more direct source of constructive advice from more experienced dudes than you'll get from some novice drawfag like me.

Ah, shit, I forgot something important: Static poses can still be lively with things like proper posture and technical shit I don't know, and dynamic poses can still look stiff and unnatural if you don't pull it off right. It's all about confidence in your ability, and the looseness of your poses/lines, and plain skill.

She's half plant half bot, and that LCD face secretly functions as a separate character, but yeah, I guess you can say that. Thanks for the stuff!

You into demon dicks?

You mean this guy?

Yep

Whatever happened to the guy with the unicorn idea?

Not bad not bad

And this thread has been going so well

Not bad man

It's better than that other thread with the animu OP pic

Hey Holla Forums

Her design's all done, and i'm jolly as all hell.

Still a very rough early sketch stages of a character design. Took me forever just to get this far. I know I still need to fix a few proportions and add a lot of details here and there. I would be open to some ideas though. I feel like I should work on writing my story first but I'd feel better if I had a good idea of how I wanted the characters to look first.

I love his head design! Would love to draw him sometime.

Keep practicing

Thank you. I am still working diligently to improve on him and the head design is something I've become very proud of.

Will do. I'm still very much an amateur and have a long way to go.

Alright, I did some more tweaks here and there. I think I've nailed what sort of design idea I'm going for with him. The idea is almost like he's an amalgamation of a wolf, bug, and human. I've really inspired him heavily off of Kamen Riders and there monsters. I'm still no finished but I think I reached a good milestone. Feel free to drop ideas so I can improve his design. I know for sure I need to improve on my drawing all together already.

Implement some claws and armor, be careful to not make it end up as capeshit.

Claws are a definite. Just have to figure out how to draw some good looking hands. I wanna add some more natural armor onto him like I did for the chest. I just don't want it to look too much like a costume. It has to look it's a part of him.

The story of this character is far from capeshit. It's more of a fantasy story of two brothers in an alien sort of world.

I think your character designs are fun to draw and see, user. You got charm. Maybe just work on your LoA for livelier posing, I'd say.

I have some, it's garbage.

It's kinda cute

D'awww, thank you! Don't ask me why, but gun arms are pretty fun. Hopefully when I fill up this entire canvas, it'll be full of different poses and stuff, my coloring is amazing!

Keep up the work user

That's a nice compliment, but it's a little brief and bare to bump a thread that hasn't been posted in for four days with.

Got anything else, the bunny character remind me of those old newgrounds vids back in 2008

I'd probably post more of my stuff if there was more of an interest to see such.

Nah can't hurt, its the nature of the thread post shit you made if its good keep working and if its bad >>>/loomis/ better than 75% i'll tell you that.

Allow me to bump with a character, then.

I don't know what's better; those dubs, or your character.

Well alright. I'll post what I've been working on later then.

Replying to you since you told me to just post anyway.

So this is the culmination of hours of reworkings and designing my character. It's quite far from perfect. I am an extreme amateur. But I feel happy with what I accomplished. It's not 100% guaranteed to be the final design but it's first really fleshed out one that I've ever done. I'm totally open to suggestions and other redesigns of him as well.

Unrelated to the design, but you could either invest I a scanner or take a picture of him facing the sheet. As it is now the picture is skewed. There might also be scanner phone apps with vertical and horizontal lines that help take shots of documents.

Wish I had, user.

I could try that. I don't have a big paper scanner available though. Sorry. I'm very new to all this.

...

Not bad, got anything else to show?

I have this image lying around. forgot what I was making it for,

...

Here's a character that hasn't touched these threads in a while

Is this better, user?

thaub

Much better. It's easier to assess the proportions. In that sense, I feel like the hands and feet are a bit small, and the legs a bit short, but that might be what you were going for, I think some apes have these kinds of proportions.
Other than that, I like the contrast between the hard and sleek looking parts and the more fuzzy ones. I feel like you could start drawing him in action to see how it fares. Maybe try a side and a behind view as well to determine the design in 3D.

Ah thank you. The proportion issues are from too factors. I can't draw hands super well and the large amounts of fur make his legs look stubbier. I'm happy to have feedback though. I would like to try drawing him in more action like poses. I'm still very amateurish though. Want to at least draw his brother next then move on to pose practices.

I really appreciate the feedback though.

Penguin people?

Looks more like a desert bird. So something like a vulture or falcon underneath the clothes.

I like it!

Shit, now that's some good design.

danke

Your style looks familiar. Were these also you?

They were, yes.

What a nice looking witch doctor. That fucking special snowflake eye.

You sure have one hell of a imagination
