Making Windows 10 Secure

I require windows 10 as my jobs as a graphics designer calls for the use of photoshop and I like to play steam games on my free time. However, I realize that windows 10 is a fundamentally insecure operating system, but I must continue to use it, and therefore want to know how I can make the best of the situation.

I have already modified the settings to disable cortana and to stop geo tracking so that is always a plus, but I want to know if there are changes I can make on the programming level to make sure that the botnet isn't stealing my work data and my browsing history.

What I can do:

What I cannot do:

Any help is appreciated!

First step: Uninstall Windows 10.

Second step: Profit.

I am being serious. I need windows 10 for work related applications.

Please help and not contribute shitposts.

Go back to 4chan/g/

Here's your step 3

You can't. It's as simple as that.

If you're using Windows 10 and can't block it from the internet, you're pretty screwed. Can you ar least boot a live linux usbstick to do all of your internet related activities? Can you disable all unnecessary services? Can you install a firewall that blocks all inbound and outbound internet traffic except what is specifically required by your company?

Step 1: Delete Windows
Step 2: Install Gentoo
Step 3: DVI Passthrough
Step 4: Monitor your connections on the Linux level and make blocks as such.

Install GNU/Linux and Krita.

An actual answer, as I had a similar situation with Win10.
Use a program like TCPview or Wireshark to see what is sending info back to MS, then use your ability to delete programs to delete things that are sending info to unknown places. If you cannot delete the program, try to block the program's connections by using Windows Firewall or block it in the router.

For CMD, use
sc delete DiagTrack
sc delete dmwappushservice

Finally, go into Msconfig.msc or services.msc (or download autoruns) and do some reading about which programs do what in order to know what to disable.

Try spybot anti-beacon
It allows you to block telemetry and disactvates certain program settings of windows 10.

Con;
You need to maually check for updates at their homepage. Whenever there is a new update

This is obly effective for windows integrated spy ware. Does not make the pc more secure

If you have a real job they gave you a work computer and you shouldn't care about what botnet shit is on that computer because that's the responsibility of your company's IT department. You shouldn't be using your work computer for ANY personal shit, especially not video games. This is just common sense.

safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/ and this has some extra stuff

oo-software.com/en/shutup10 then this has a bunch of options to disable different kinds of telemetry

Editing the services by running (windows key + r) and type services.msc , in the Windows 7 page on install gentoo there should be a picture that tells you what to edit, the majority of them will be off after running those programs, but some still need to be. May want to search what other services can be turned off.

...

Keep it as it is and use it solely for photoshop and video games.
Dual boot into linux or buy a laptop for all of your other needs.

Also as others have said, you can use krita, gimp, something else, or photoshop in linux through wine.

None of this works, there is literally nothing you can do.
The best you can do is just boot it in a VM or having another computer.

I have a normie tablet that contains my online persona, that is what you must do, read Blind Faith for more detail.

You cannot secure a black box.
Proprietary software like windows 10 rely on security trough obscurity of course this has been debunked more than once in 30 years.

How do you know that the settings won't be changed ?
Are they even applied correctly ?
Are you sure that the hosts file applies to 100% of the system and MS hasn't put some strange rules for some of their own software to not read it ?
You don't and cannot know that because it's a black box.
If you try to secure it it will only be a fake security to reassure your mind that you've tried.
It's just a mind trick that you do to yourself.

I understand your needs but this is reality, you cannot secure a black box.

Their are other solution that works nowadays like this user proposed.
-Install gentoo
-Install a virtual machine
-Use PCI passthrough
wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/PCI_passthrough
-Install your shit software on the VM
-It just works.

Be be warned for the future of adobe
In the new CS6 cloud they have began to verify the content of your work and if you don't have the license of for example fonts then they will force you to remove it by not saving the fonts.
GTFO of adobe and give shekels to gimp, inskcape, scribus or synfig (krita has enough for now).
Go put some bounties there's a website like freedomsponsors.org/ that exist.

Just use TempleOS. Nobody needs more than 16 colors or 640x480. Also no botnet.

It works, but I doubt it gets rid of everything. This took a huge load off of the OS. Stupid on how much bloat the telemetry stuff causes.

Even if it does/did work, be sure do it all over again when windows next updates itself.

Every single windows update changes everything back to default.

twitter.com/m8urnett/status/866353982217699328?lang=en
Look in horror as this guy disables everything in Win10E(including registry keys) and still has everything go through, even Paint3D reinstalls itself.

You need a seperate normie machine, let it spy on you as you browse failarmy and like images on facebook, do some design work, maybe even google things like "is it gay to find men attractive?", lack of information is suspicious.

If you are really this tinfoil-hatty, then grab a gratis Windows 10 VM from MS.

developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/virtual-machines

Why are they giving that away for free? Does it escalate itself out of the VM and enable telemetry on your Linux machine?

Hint: developer.microsoft.com

Also, read what's on the page first. It's only gratis if you choose the VM with the Enterprise edition and that's because it basically expires after a while since Windows and development tools get upgraded fast these days.

The only way to secure Windows 10 is to air-gap it. Disconnect it from networks, both wired and wireless, permanently. Copy files to and from the machine with USB drives.

Security updates and malware scanning is more labour-intensive with an air-gapped computer, but if you're copying files to and from that computer with a USB drive you still need to worry about malware hitching a ride.

Also, Steam is borderline-unusable on an air-gapped computer.

This is literally the only way to secure your privacy on Windows 10. Not figuratively. Literally. On Windows 10, you can pick networking, or you can pick privacy. Time to make a choice.

This is the clinical definition of paranoia.

No it isn't. It's just factual reality.

Wrong. This is not paranoia. This is a serious recommendation based on the hard facts of how Windows 10 telemetry operates.

Definition of Paranoia:

-Windows 10 is a black box.
Definition of Black box:
Can you trust a black box ?
No
Why ?
Because you don't know how it works and can't.
Plus Microsoft participates in Prism and other spying projects it looks onto every possible people using their products.
Nowadays it also uses the data it acquires to sell it to databrokers.

So is there unfounded or exaggerated distrust ?
No
There is no paranoia concerning what people want to do with their computers nowadays it's just the effect of the constant mass spying that the world is going trough.

do the impossible

There's always GIMP on Linux, which I found to be a perfectly good substitute for Photoshop. Steam runs fine on Linux too (and I mean natively, not under WINE, although that works too and can get more games running than the linux client), and with WINE you can run almost all Windows software and games. If you're interested in checking out Linux, here are the basic Holla Forums Linux distribution recommendations: Devuan (for lazy bastards), Gentoo (for more computer literate people), Slackware (for fans of the command-line; it's honestly pretty easy to learn if you're interested).

If you're curious if something will run on WINE: appdb.winehq.org/

The reason we can't exactly help you secure Windows 10 beyond what you've already done is because you're fucked. All I have are these silly links from a websearch for you:
winaero.com/blog/how-to-disable-telemetry-and-data-collection-in-windows-10/
winaero.com/blog/stop-windows-10-spying-on-you-using-just-windows-firewall/

Unless you break Windows Update though it wouldn't surprise me if you end up discovering that these rules stopped working like they should or you're connecting to new (unblocked) telemetry servers or shit. And it wouldn't surprise me if that didn't keep out everything. And bear in mind that Windows probably has security holes so if you keep out windows update you might discover after a while that you got infested with some ransomware or shit.

Nah, just a popular computer security adage. "The only secure computer is one that's disconnected from the internet." (or "The only secure computer is one that's turned off.") That's doubly true of Windows computers, sadly.

Why don't people apply Occam's razor here? Disabling features still means they connect to servers, according to some sources.

Well, in SmartScreen's case, for example, it probably does this so that its database is updated when you enable it again.

People like to see malice in things that aren't there.

That's Heinlein's Razor ("Never attribute to malice where stupidity will suffice"). Occam's Razor is "Given one or more equally valid interpretations, you should prefer the simplest one." (ie. don't overcomplicate shit).

In Windows's case there's been plenty of malice surrounding both Windows 10's virus-like methods of sneaking in your updates as a hidden installation until you're suddenly booting Windows 10, the ways it tries to spy on you and decide for you what you should or should not be allowed to run, and the ways it tries to resist all methods of users obtaining control of their own computer system.

And if you're one of those "privacy is overrated, I have nothing to hide, and I trust big brother to look out for me" types, then please leave.

I didn't say that privacy doesn't matter nor do I think it's overrated but hyperboles never help anyone.

They clearly said from the start that they would aggressively promote the free Windows 10 upgrade. I don't understand how this surprised anyone. And I took months to upgrade and it always respected my decision to not upgrade right away so I guess some idiots just told it to upgrade without reading properly as is usual with idiots.
Like what?
I can run the exact same software as before and there's nothing preventing me from doing so.
Please elaborate.

There's a difference between "aggressively promoting" and "forcibly installing." Microsoft clean went over the edge and started doing the latter. You had to pre-emptively disable the updates so it wouldn't happen and a lot of them were very deceptively categorized and labelled.

...

I'm a giant Linux and GPL fanboy. I've been using Linux as my main OS in various forms for almost two decades, ever since using Slackware 3.4 in 1998. And I gotta say that GIMP is definitely no substitute for Photoshop.

First off, it had nothing to do with the UI. I actually prefer the classic MDI GIMP interface over Photoshop. My complaints are entirely about features. GIMP still lacks proper support for 16-bit and 32-bit channels, there's no adjustment layers, and there's almost no nondestructive editing capability. And that's just the start.

GIMP is a toy. It's not a Photoshop competitor. It's barely a Paint.net competitor.

Have you used Krita before?

You have to take a stand some day. If today is that day it will be a lot less painful than if that day is in CY+3. And Photoshop is no longer a proper ( (((proprietary))) ) program reciding on your computer, but acts as a SaaSS[0]; Adobe controls your computer, you don't control Photoshop.
With Steam, you are not allowed to sell games you have purchased[1] and Steam do use DRM. Also Steam has prohibited class-action lawsuits in their July 2012 update to the subscriber agreement[2] meaning that if someone you share experience of 77 million gamers in the spring 2011 Playstation Network infiltration[3], you have waived your standing to sue for mishandling of sensitive information.

Follow this anons advice and install Krita. If you really need Windows, please explain in moar detail why that is.

Windows 10 LTSB 2015/2016 N. Disable all the possible anti-features. Some can't be disabled so it's inevitably pozzed but that's what you get for using wingdings.

Some of this stuff is vastly outdated since the Facebook thingy and the Wi-Fi Sense credentials sharing were removed.

As to the rest, I think people are just freaking out and not taking things into context. Those things are rather fine, actually.

Feel free to let us know what the right context would be for wiretapping people and recording their personal information. Because I'm not seeing it.

I'm wondering if you're a shill because I'm having a very hard time understanding how someone could just ignore and downplay problems of that magnitude otherwise. Is this just an unwillingness to face facts. Because everything you claim is being taken out of context and misinterpreted somehow was listed in Microsoft's own words.

Doesn't old xp style firewalls, block and show every exe and at least the first ip connected to?
With glasswire and peerblock, everzday there is a surprise connection, like explorer.exe or rundll32.exe skypehost.exe outlook communications.exe one my re-apperaing favs microsoft.photos.exe and video application, or some SIUF SIH a lot.
Was once on a metered phoneline, win10 think's it is funny to pump 500mb thru the line, well fuck.

Yes. Krita is pretty darn good. It's still not quite at feature parity with Photoshop, but I'd certainly call it usable. It has high-bit-depth support and good nondestructive editing tools. I'd say it's about on par with Paintshop Pro.

I keep hoping that Serif's devs bring native Affinity Photo to Linux someday. Now THERE'S an excellent Photoshop competitor.

That's because krita isn't made to be photoshop.
Gimp is but lack a lot of features for now.

No one is forced to use Windows 10. You are asked to read and then agree or deny the terms of the license before installing the OS.

I downplay it because no one is realistically being affected by this in their daily lives.

GIMP has been lacking a lot of features "for now" for TWO DECADES. I remember mailing list discussions about adding high-bit-depth support "in the next version" PRIOR TO 9/11!

GIMP's development pace can be charitably described as "glacial". GIMP still lacks critical features, like adjustment layers, that were in Photoshop 7. Yeah, 7. As in "released in 2002" 7.

And GIMP developers are solely to blame. They are notoriously territorial, downright hostile towards outsiders (such as academic researchers) looking to contribute code, are rude towards users, and suffer from a horrendous case of NIH syndrome. They've made a lot of enemies among the big open-source-backing companies that could contribute money, by being supremely arrogant.

Compare and contrast to Krita's developers, who are deeply engaged with users and the academic community, and welcome newcomers providing code and bugfixes. Krita is a prime example of how to run a project right.

Blatant lies. Tell that to all the people who unwillingly had their PCs updated to Windows 10 thanks to Windows Update shenanigans. MS didn't even give you a choice. It would auto-download and auto-install and you would just boot up and discover you had the Windows 10 you never wanted or needed.

So what you mean is "Yes, big brother is watching me and copying down notes on everything I do, but I'm sure I'm not big brother's concern so it doesn't bother me." I have no clue what you're doing on Holla Forums to be honest.

What the fuck is up with the influx of pro-Microsoft threads here? Did Macrohard offer their IDF bonuses if they shill it harder?

go back to school

They did. I already told you that I received the upgrade notification and refused it and that months went by with nothing happening.

Do you only listen to one side of the question when the subject doesn't coincide with your beliefs?

You're an idiot.

Exactly.

Pull that good ol' sneaky beakeroo on em'.

just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you

You're not going to be able to shut off the spying. The only way to do it is to not use Windows 10 at all.

You have a few options here that are much better. The first is buying a Mac. This is your easiest option. It'll work out of the box, doesn't send your data to Apple unless you allow it during setup or by changing a setting. The hardware is expensive and mediocre but it's still better than Winshit.

Second option is a hackintosh or a Mac desktop. These are actually great options as long as you're hackintoshing compatible hardware. Building your own PC is easy, and this is probably your best option if you don't need portability. Installing OS X and Clover is pretty easy. I don't recommend hackintoshing laptops. It's a lot hardware and you've have to do all kinds of BIOS updates/mods and replace networking cards and stuff. It's a pain in the ass.

Next option is to use Windows 10 in a VM with Ubuntu or something as the host OS. It's a pain to set up and won't work well on laptops.

The last option is to dual boot. Use Winshit only for work, then boot into a different OS for shitposting and games. This is obviously inconvenient but it's easier than setting up VMs or hackintoshing.

This is sad but true. Another graphic designer on /g/, patachu once found a fix, blocking the microsoft and partners' from the system32\etc\hosts file, but there MS released an update on the 1607 which integrates MS's servers in the KERNEL level.
the solution? block the MS's IPs from the ROUTER itself, this is what enterprises does now to ensure no data are leaked, they feel concerned and they are right.

Install CinePaint then.

Cinepaint hasn't been updated in 5 years. Also, it still lacks half-decent nondestructive editing tools.

Hell, it's not even anywhere near paranoia. Paranoia is thinking that EVERYONE is out to get you. Thinking that someone whos is out to get everyone, is out to get you as well, is not paranoia.
Microsoft was the first participant in the PRISM program. And then there's the whole NSAKey debacle from 1999/2000: archive.is/hWqg cryptome.org/nsakey-ms-dc.htm.
We have so much evidence that Microsoft is out to spy on all of its users, that anyone disputing this is either a shill or a retard.
So not only have Microsoft not earned our trust, they have earned our distrust.

Just dump Windows 10. It might not be easy right now, but it will only get harder. You don't have access to the source code, and even if you did, it's not a given you would have understood everything that was going on in there. Don't kid yourself, drop Botnet 10!

Give me one example of someone who has been affected by Microsoft's "spying". I'll wait.

And you're being watched regardless of what you use. Not using the most convenient OS actually calls more attention to you, not less.

I unironically think Linux is far more convenient for most of my usage, and just generally feels better to use.

Are you denying that Microsoft is spying on its users? Oh, and leaks don't happen little by little. They breach like a dike, and when your secrets are public it's to late to say:

You'd expect that to happen after 30 years and it hasn't.

30 years ago, operating systems didn't have (((telemetry))).

The NHS

You wont heard of them directly because they probably dont know how.

...

And they were worse in many regards.

Are you saying that companies shouldn't work to remove content that is in violation of the law from their services? Your article specifically mentions CP.

How was the NHS affected?

...

You are clearly missing the point. They can use the pretext of searching for cp to tap all communications made in the windows environment. Just like goverments seize more surveliance powers with the argument that it helps to catch terrorists at the cost of innocent people losing all their privacy.
You never know who is getting all the data, and it is well documented that corporations and goverments end up exchanging or selling data of their citizens to other countries and corporations.
microcuck

They shouldn't be gathering all that data, and that data will sooner or later be leaked, then abused. Once it's leaked to the chans and torrent sites, you cannot erase it from the internet: it's better to be safe than sorry.

This kind of shit really shouldn't be legal. Also, steam has a massive vulnerability by design, namely the steam:// protocol handler which is handled by your web browser and steam's internal web browser. Among other things, it allows an attacker to launch arbitrary games with arbitrary launch parameters, which is sufficient to take control of a machine. It was reported in 2014 and isn't getting fixed because steam itself uses the steam:// protocol handler a lot.

t. shill

I'm still waiting for any examples of NSAKEY being used for spying. I don't want conjecture, I want a hard evidence.

What the NSAKEY[1]

NSAKEY is among a body of evidence of Microsoft collusion with the NSA. This is about why you should not trust Microsoft with either your computer or your data.
In life you often have to make decisions based on vague information, this is unavoidable, but the Snowden revelations is that hard evidence you are looking for as well as this: . Windows 10 spies on you no matter what you do even in Enterprise!

No, but the key made it much easier installing backdoors into Windows, and if they are forced by law into making backdoors easier, we shouldn't trust them. They make their business decision, we stay away from their proprietary software. And "cyber munitions" is a concept so laughably retarded that it will be remembered for millennias to come.
I'm sure the NSA never needed the _NSAKEY for getting backdoor access, it just goes to show how important it is for them to not only have backdoor access but also sidedoor access. Also mentioning _NSAKEY makes Microsoft wet their pants a little bit each time, so it makes me feel smug.

It is for those reasons you ought to avoid it like the fucking plague. Even on LTSB you run an unacceptably high risk of having a system that one day for no fucking reason at all decides it'll no longer recognize your tablet as an input device.

W10 is fucking awful if you're a professional user.

Why not just run steam and photoshop in wine? You can even automate some of the trickier install workarounds using playonlinix. /thread

Until that shit gets sorted, is it alright to just have a drive dedicated to wangblows?

Yea no shit it doesn't work.

OP: Use W10 Privacy. It lets you uninstall and/or disable pretty much everything. MS hasn't reactivated features via updates (yet).

*at half the performance :^)

You are aware that the Settings app changes the Registry, right? It's like you don't understand how things work.

Update your bios.

AEGSA 1.0.0.6 fixed iommu grouping by applying ACS to the motherboard directly.

OP still hasn't learned his lesson. Don't tell him other OS'es exist.

...

I nearly pissed myself when he turns the webcam, showing the monitor.

Fucking moron doesn't know how to turn that shit off? It's not fucking hard.

I unironically support this

literally every person with a job doesn't have thousands of hours to play hacker pretending they are debotneting their machine you fucking autist omg

1.delete yoou MAKECA$Hoft FAILDOW$
2.instal templeOS
3.draw in 16 color :)

I want summerfags and/or shills to leave...

Lies, IOMMU is about the same performance as native, that's the whole point.

WINDOWS 10 IS THE BEST OS NO VIRUSES

they do seem to have time for updates that take hours though

meanwhile in GNU/Linux land, updates take minutes, and you don't even need to reboot if you don't want to!

as always though, Winblowsfags will defend this

Nice personal anecdote, that sure beat the shit out of any rational argument.

Your bait became obvious here.

This is Amy Schumer pretending to be an user.

They have been doing it elsewhere too.

Confirmed for retarded kid who doesn't actually know what a graphic designer does or what mediums they work in.

user, that's close to impossibru

Anyone happen to have the webm proving Windows 10 spies on you and sends data back to Microsoft?

...

do not reply to anyone that says they need "some specific version of windows" which is usually 8 or 10

IIRC Wang stopped making PCs around the time Windows 95 launched.

what is wrong with you

What if I don't wanna?

that's because almost nothing is ever changed/added :'^)

I sure do love those 'no reboot' updates that fuck up webserver configs while running and serve internal files to the public for a brief period. That's so much better than doing all updates from a safe state like on Windows.

If you are not happy with the default configuration of Microsoft Windows 10 and you wish to secure the product more, please follow the Microsoft Security Guidance blog at blogs.technet.microsoft.com/secguide/

quick and easy

the average Microsoft MVP

gr8 b8. all the mainstream distros are bloated as fuck and require 50 updates a day because some asshole needed to make another UX tweek for his Gnome 3 app. This is _exactly_ the same as Windows, and this is not a good thing.

Keep it offline forever. Pretty much the only way to secure a windows 10 box. I actually did that with my workstation that had work sensitive data.

You cannot. You will never know what proprietary software is doing behind your back.

Can you even boot a Win10 box without a "verifiable" (via HTTPS) connection to a certified Microsoft connection? Why is everyone ITT normalizing Win10. Even normalfags still run pre-8 versions of Windows. There's literally no point in using Windows 10.

Because money.
Because laziness.
Because ==MUH GAME MUH JOBS==
Because of all the disinformation about GNU/linux and "Open source".

...

It's better to use the term "free" instead of "open source". GNU/Linux is all about the user's liberties. The phrase "open source" only refers to one of the user's liberties: the liberty to study the source code of the program. That's why sticklers for terminology insist on calling it Free Software. In this context, the word "free" is only referring to the user's liberties, and it has nothing to do with price.
