Global Politics is basically a game of who falls last. In the Cold War it was a good idea to side with the USA because the Soviets weren't using a sustainable system and were clearly miserable, and the Chinese were also doing pretty shitty what with multiple famines mostly caused by being stupid.

The problem is that a lot of international geopolitics thinks it's still the same situation in the modern US vs China vs Russia game. The problem is they aren't "real" communists and they don't have the same flaws. China is in a money bubble but it's a bubble they can sustain longer than ours because their bubble is essentially based on labor rather than a currency bubble(they've been extending it in large part due to china using chinese banks funding chinese labor to go overseas and build there on billion dollar contracts). The american dollar is going to take a hit again faster than the Chinese can run out of second and third world nations that'll give up on essentially receiving free labor. Especially with the jews trying to crash the dollar to spite trump.

It's also a game of faces. Obama has, over the last six months, revealed himself as a back talking, cowardly, sniveling man. He can't bring himself to look Putin in the eye. He back talks his own citizens when overseas. He goes back on his previous statements on Clinton more or less constantly. Duterte knows if it comes down to a face to face meeting he can stare down Obama and make him flinch and has rather vocally called him on it. As a bit of clarification, there's a BIG difference between geopolitics on an international level, and the idea of two world leaders having a face to face meeting behind closed doors. A good example of this is Canada and the USA during the vietnam war. Canada didn't want to send anyone.

The president could have tried exerting any number of written documents. Which would have devolved into a long paperwork battle. Instead he realized he was significantly larger and stronger than his Canadian counterpart.
