The internal sugar industry documents, recently discovered by a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, and published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, suggest that five decades of research into the role of nutrition and heart disease, including many of today’s dietary recommendations, may have been largely shaped by the sugar industry.

“They were able to derail the discussion about sugar for decades,” said Stanton Glantz, a professor of medicine at U.C.S.F. and an author of the JAMA paper.

The documents show that a trade group called the Sugar Research Foundation, known today as the Sugar Association, paid three Harvard scientists the equivalent of about $50,000 in today’s dollars to publish a 1967 review of research on sugar, fat and heart disease. The studies used in the review were handpicked by the sugar group, and the article, which was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, minimized the link between sugar and heart health and cast aspersions on the role of saturated fat.

Even though the influence-peddling revealed in the documents dates back nearly 50 years, more recent reports show that the food industry has continued to influence nutrition science.

Last year, an article in The New York Times revealed that Coca-Cola, the world’s largest producer of sugary beverages, had provided millions of dollars in funding to researchers who sought to play down the link between sugary drinks and obesity. In June, The Associated Press reported that candy makers were funding studies that claimed that children who eat candy tend to weigh less than those who do not.

The Harvard scientists and the sugar executives with whom they collaborated are no longer alive. One of the scientists who was paid by the sugar industry was D. Mark Hegsted, who went on to become the head of nutrition at the United States Department of Agriculture, where in 1977 he helped draft the forerunner to the federal government’s dietary guidelines. Another was Dr. Fredrick J. Stare, the chairman of Harvard’s nutrition department.

Weight loss is only a small part exercise.

1. Switch to sports drinks like Powerade and uncarbonated sodas like Hawaiian Punch and iced tea first. This is to break you of your "If I drink something uncarbonated, I'm still thirsty" habit. Do this for at least a month.
2. Double points if you have a coffee habit and switch to sweetened herbal tea at the same time. If you have a sweet tea habit, make the tea at home and cut the sugar in half. If you drink black coffee, switch to black tea. Again, do it for at least a month.
3. Switch from uncarbonated sugar drinks to lightly sweetened herbal teas or make fruit-infused waters at home. Here's some recipes for fruit infused water:

If you're doing already doing sweetened herbal tea, stop adding sugar. Again, stick there for at least a month.

5. Drink nothing but water. If you fall off the wagon, buy a single serving soda or sugary drink and go right back to your routine. I guarantee you that after three months of not drinking soda, soda is going to taste weird and syrupy. You might still enjoy it as a treat, almost like a dessert, but you'll wonder how you ever managed to convince yourself that drinking a thick sugar syrup full of artificial bubbles was quenching your thirst. Also, after three months of not drinking it, the carbonation will start to burn a little like it did when you were a little kid.

Personally, I managed to beat it in two months by switching to sport drinks and then quitting entirely, but ymmv.

Protein induces a secretion of insulin but it also induces a secretion of glucagon.

If you're doing the keto diet for example and you eat too much protein it can be converted to glucose.

Get an app called 'Water Drink Reminder', drink the minimum water requirement on that for your weight per day. Drink as much coke as you usually do, though you probably won't feel like you need to once you force that water down you. Do not sharply drink the water, spread it out across the day, a bottle per hour for example. The app will remind you based on a time interval which you can change.

Over time, slowly drink less and less soda. And then eventually, only drink it with meals. And then eventually, don't drink it at all. The occasional soda is fine though, and I do mean a single soda every now and then. Here's a diet coke from Israel, it says do not drink more than 3gr aspartame, the sweetener used in most horrifying concoctions these days.
