first thing's first- the pph didn't wildly go down as a result of the change in board model. that was a site wide thing, and although i'm sure we did loose some extra pph by virtue of the event, that's partly dysnomia's fault and partly the positive, intended consequence. pph will go down in a limited-thread model because as the quality of the board culture improves, because of the conversation being more streamlined, if people can't keep up or refuse to adapt and naturalize to the quickly growing "canon" of the board culture then they'll be left behind. people are forced to more actively participate (or leave), because it is only through this participation that anything ever gets better.
it's partly dysnomia's fault because of his very flawed implementation of the ideas i'll pretty much assume everybody can agree can be explicitly traced backed to me. dysnomia is fickle, as evidenced by him giving up with the board model so quickly, but a successful change requires a gradual move, like the privatization of services in a government looking to get smaller. to suddenly change the board completely is something i actually predicted would drive away users, iirc. i suggested a gradual change, first by hiring mods to sticky threads that they find good (to get it into the userbase as accepted behavior for the moderation to control what threads are present), and then perhaps also by "singularizing" topics one by one by slowly limiting them to one cyclical until they're all that's left. this, i predicted, would prevent user outrage and make people accept the state of things more in general. this didn't happen and planned exodus-es almost occurred, and the decision was overwhelmingly unpopular (note my theory does not equate the popularity of an idea with it's worth, but rather accepts the reality that a userbase will just leave presented with something they'd rather not participate in).
the actual categories of the threads themselves were pretty dumb, too. the different broad, topical cyclicals almost lended themselves to making it as boring as possible to post- they're pretty much identical to 4chan's hobby boards. they're categories for they're own sake, a young moot throwing board ideas to the wall unsure of how much traffic they'll garner- not dysnomia, who already evidently at least in some capacity knows what people here post, making categories that reflect what people here tend to talk about, and what will most effectively make a distinct culture for every thread develop. there's the ticket- if you're willing to betray popular opinion in favor of trying the board model to increase board quality in the first place, why not go further and also betray suggestions on what threads to make in favor of those that'll bring the most quality and culture? what threads there are should be decided in the interest of creating culture, not fulfilling neat divisions across subjects- for example, the threads i'd have made would've looked something like:
you see how my threads are catered towards the community's postings, rather than just arbitrary distinctions? hell, i'd throw in another misc thread (maybe bumplock it and give it a spooky name like "the basement") just to see what comes out of there.
the third thing dysnomia did wrong is that he didn't democratize the moderation. i could write more about this but tis self-explanatory. my original post with my reasoning is saved on /srz/. it goes hand in hand with the limited thread model, mod elections open up some fun opportunities, etc.
