Imageboards produce a lot of shit, which you have to mine for the nuggets of gold.
Up/downboats produce enforced consensus where the only ideas you see aren't necessarily brilliant or even factually correct, but everyone understands and can agree to.

Unless it gets to the point that threads, boards or meetings unusable from irrelevant spam (which is what flood detection and capcha are for) or illegal content (which is what global reports and vols are for), I think shitposting and trolling generally do more good than harm. They keep away the people easily offended by shitposting and trolling, who generally don't contribute a whole lot to the board besides their butthurt. I don't see them as making the site worse. At their worst I see them as inclement weather that only happens in free countries/forums/movements. You can't have one without the other, they come with the territory and are part of how the system is able to function.
