There are different severities, different etiologies, etc. In most instances, you can just get by with tossing them a Z-pack and be treated outpatient. But then there are the really bad cases where you need to be on a mechanical ventilator and you're down with some resistance strain of pseudomonas and it's gone septic.

And it can progress in severity, starting off looking like a standard mild case and then quickly becoming one that requires hospitalization.
