How much do they usually pay, and what are the chances that you get jew'd for your money? I'm not familiar with Amazon, do they transfer money directly or you need PayPal?

Amazon won't jew you out of the money, but most of the time HITs don't pay very much. Especially at the beginning. You need a good track record and some free certifications you can get there to access the higher paying jobs. Speaking English fluently is a good start.

There is a reputation system, taken jobs/completed jobs/accepted jobs. Higher numbers and a better ratio lets you take higher paying and more difficult jobs.

Some companies will occasionally try to fuck you like that, but it's very rare.

When you start out, yes, you need to do roughly 100 HITS for a dollar. After a week or so, you'll stop doing those shit jobs, and only do jobs that are 10 cent plus. Like this user said, , it's good for pocket change. Do it in between shit posting.

You basically just keep applying for lots of transcription companies until you get hired, but you do need to be very proficient in English grammar and punctuation (for English speaking countries at least), a fast typer, and also able to focus extremely well. Like I said before, it's harder than it sounds.

Here's another resource of places to apply to. I scanned through this list - I know of some of the names as being reliable and paying well. You basically just take their tests, and they'll contact you if they want to put you on a trial period. They don't care about PC shit, just if you're good or not. Mine didn't even require a resume.

Go to the websites of the companies on that list I linked, and go from there based on which ones you think look the best (usually whoever has the best designed site, tbh.) They'll usually have their style guidelines you have to follow and a test for you to take.

I'm not willing to say who I work for here, and I was accepted to the first one I applied for and didn't bother to apply to any others. I've heard of some in passing as being okay, like Verbal Ink, for instance. I know they have a pretty good pay scale and are legit.

You can work full-time or part-time. It's up to you, though it's unlikely they'd start you out at full-time unless you were very good. There'd be a training period if they're a good transcription company. They don't want oafs. But if you are good and have a fast turnaround time, then you're bound to get as much as you want, as long as the company you're contracting with has lots of clients, that is.

And to answer your question, I'm sometimes in the mood for full-time and sometimes not. I've done it for a few years now and am getting a bit burnt out and ready for something new, so I'm saving up for my own business at this point and spending more time planning for that.

Also, another idea is for you to go completely on your own instead of contracting with a big transcription company that takes a sizable portion (they charge the clients about 65 an hour) after you've mastered it enough. You could do that at places like Odesk and Elance and charge up to 25-30 an hour, and possibly even get into book editing work. I've looked into this, but never done it myself.

Some really are hair-pulling hard and make you not enjoy life, though - like having to transcribe verbatim (meaning every single utterance) of methed out witnesses to gang-bang shootings, where the audio is shit and you can barely make out what the junkie is saying over the detectives constantly interrupting him, which you must also transcribe every utterance of.

I signed a lengthy contract that promises to sue me if I do. Do some research, user. I found this job after only researching for a couple hours. I know they hire folks in Europe, I've seen people from France on there.

I had to study a very long guideline and take 3 tests in less than a week. If you have a life outside of it, good luck. I was sitting at my desk for 12 hours at a time studying. I made only about 1.1k the first month, but I only clocked in 80 hours. Best part about it is you get to pick your own hours.

The other day I was looking for simple jobs I could do part time and on Craigslist there was an interesting job offer, it was a transcription job: you listen to the audio file and you type the text as accurately as you can as if you were in a courtroom or something.

I didn't get the job – they never replied to me – but it's the type of job offer you can find on some Craigslist websites.

It was real in my mind.
