Typically these shows are written by people who were socially retarded, and they need to feel like they were grander than they were. Being socially retarded is, after all, a sign of your brain not being quite developed right.

The smart kids are typically not the socially retarded ones, but the friendly ones. They might not be as outgoing and chatty as the social kids but they also won't go out of their ways to be dicks in the way socially retarded kids do, because they understand that there's no reason to do so.

See the thing is, people who are retarded or socially retarded will often insist that they are smarter than they are and throw out words they don't really understand to assert themselves.
