Trump won the coin toss and chose to let Hillary go first, knowing she'd be an easy act to follow. Laur immediately brought up the emails and the first audience question was also emails. Since this was an all military veteran audience, they didn't hesitate and asked why she'd get away with shit they'd be court martialed for. Hillary immediately was forced on the defensive and basically had to talk in circles rather than actually explain why she wasn't arrested.

It just got worse from there. The next two questions were Benghazi related, one from a Sargent(read: a guy who started as a boot on the ground and spent his whole career leading men on the ground), and one from a pilot who was physically there AT Benghazi. She had no friends in that room and had to basically run out the clock by rambling and refusing to let Laur ask any more questions.

Every single crowd shot in the room made it clear almost everyone there had raw contempt for her and didn't bother to hide it.

When Trump came on he damn near got a standing ovation, with a clearly warmer welcome. He gave mostly direct answers even though they tried multiple times to stump him. The very first person from the audience was a proud black woman who asked him about illegals serving in the military but he barely broke stride. When they got a crying white woman to talk about mental health and suicide he was immediately clear on what he'd do to solve the problem.

The orange motherfucker came prepared. He made it immediately clear he'd researched every relevant statistic, and when they asked him what he'd been doing he reached into his pocket and pulled out a list of dozens of generals and admirals he'd been meeting with as his Trump Card. Even when they tried to catch him in a lie he pulled out a specific date and time for his previous statement to show that was false.

He got tripped up a couple of times, it's just the nature of the beast with live unscripted questions, but was mostly solid.

Not twenty minutes after the event had ended though MSNBC tried to recut the footage to show only the best of Clinton and only the worst of Trump, including lies Clinton said ABOUT Trump after being asked not to bring him up, that Trump refuted in his portion.

Laur hit both of them HARD. The only difference is that Trump knew he was going to be hit and rolled with it. Clinton expected to get her dick sucked and was shocked that someone dared to bite down.

If there's ANYTHING I could say about Laur, it's that he didn't bring up Trump University. That's literally the only thing he didn't do. He asked Trump why the hell a real estate guy thinks he's fit to lead the military, what his plan is meant to be, why he thinks he knows more than the generals, he even dug into Trump's twitter to try hurling back statements in his face.

This is classic triangulation. If most people hear some arguing from one side, and others arguing from another, human nature is to believe that the truth is somewhere in between. This is often reasonable, but it is often also taken advantage of by liars who benefit when people think they have *some* manner of valid point and that those who call them out must be flawed, too. Essentially, the media is trying to save its credibility by accusing itself of being biased toward Trump, which they hope will balance out their clear bias against him, and convince people that the truth must be in the middle (i.e. that their coverage is impartial).

Like all forced media memes, this will be a coordinated attack designed to look like organic consensus that simply popped out of the ether. This criticism of Lauer and the last Paul Krugman column are two examples. There will be more to come.

It's important to understand that this entire thing was set up by MSNBC with no precedent and was clearly just an attempt to make Hillary look good to a bunch of army officers.

What they didn't count on was Trump actually winning the coin toss but deciding to go second anyway. The probable expectation was that either he'd take the initiative and go first or Clinton would win and go second. That way they could hit him hard first then have Clinton throw accusations out with no way to refute them. But by forcing Clinton to go first all he had to do was follow the act he knew she couldn't perform well.

They also didn't vet their attendees very well. By having someone at Benghazi there it was basically a death sentence because while she was clearly prepared to spin emails for a bit she couldn't handle being thrown for a loop point blank. They also didn't expect two or three different email questions and for Hillary not to have her story locked down from all angles.

They also picked the attendees they did vet VERY poorly. If you swapped Trump and Clinton questions she'd have done super well. But they wanted to have the women attack Trump to seem legitimate and didn't expect him to have an actual answer for them. They probably also expected the asian dude to be a polite token dude who'd softball way more than he did, since Clinton is meant to poll well with Minorities, not expecting him to be a heavily westernized asian sharing the militaries intense disdain for Clinton and general approval of Trump.

I was surprised at how decent a job Lauer did. While he was a bit tougher on Trump, he was a lot tougher on Clinton than I expected he would be.

Vet here, can confirm. When I talk to other vets, sometimes they puff their chest and go on about the righteousness of the wars, but a few minutes of discussion and questions that strip away the built-up defenses and most do get it. Some are un-saveable, but the ones who are on the right side of the IQ bell curve and are intellectually honest do absolutely get it.

I think there's also another dynamic to this. Lefties will believe anything the media tells them about Trump, and for months now they've been spoon-fed a ton of garbage that is either flat out wrong or completely taken out of context. This would include hacking up speeches to send a completely different message or just misrepresentation of Trump's views (i.e. Trump hates immigrants when he is really against illegal immigrants). I suspect that they think Lauer was going soft on Trump because the questions did not include some of those off-base accusations. Either that means Lauer was being honest, or, more likely, that the media absolutely did not want to bring that stuff up on a platform where Trump can actually refute it and bring their shenanigans to light.

Lets face it Obama had eight years to come up with a replacement. If he really cared he'd have been scouring every small town mayor in his 20's or early 30's and spent that time grooming him he could have scratch built an apprentice out of thousands of candidates. When you see him with Mike Pence, a guy he's probably never had two conversations with before this, they have an instant chemistry that most directors spend years searching for in their actors.
