As with anything it's really not the degree itself, it's what you're trying to do with it, who you know, what you're doing during college, ect. My history department has lots of programs going to allow students to work with libraries, state agencies, Library of Congress, sometimes even the State Dep.

A great misunderstanding many people make is treating natural sciences, history, literature etc like a work-degree such as engineering, medicine or law. Those are very much academical and you prepare to spend time in the academy, not out on the working market.
