People say please and thank you, sir and ma'am. You hold the door open for each other and say hello with a smile when you pass a stranger on the the street. People are happy if you ask to pet their dog or tell them their son/daughter is cute. The cashier at a store will ask you how you are doing and actually strike up a conversation if you respond with more than a simple pleasantry and there isn't a line behind you. Someone in a hurry can get annoyed avoiding small groups of people milling about because friends and family stop and talk to each other wherever they meet.
