I think the best way to go about this would be selling upgrades. It's a justifiable cost that doesn't have to be indulged by every consumer, but would probably be attractive to most consumers.

The issue with this would be scummy companies practicing planned obsolescence, and blocking off homebrew software so that you have to pay for their software upgrades. I'd be theoretically willing to pay for certain software upgrades, mind you, but I would certainly want to be able to run homebrew software.
