It's a great opportunity for smaller shipping operations. They'll be able to increase their fleets and fill the demand that's currently out there. To be specific about Hanjin itself, at least in my opinion, what has been happening is the Chinese government has been subsidizing their shipping lines as Cosco and China Shipping to operate at a deficit in order for the competition to be completely wiped out. Combine that with Hanjin ordering too many large ships that take too long to unload and you have bankruptcy. I also just stumbled upon an article about the UN subsidizing Chinese shipping while searching for sources.

I don't think that we're going to see a total collapse like everyone here thinks. I do think that we're going to see entire sectors downsize as our economies' stagnation becomes more evident. Just look at the ripple we've already seen. Consumers buy less, producers start to have issues, retailers start showing cracks, and now shipping is having issues. Next we're going to see a ripple from shipping which will include warehouses, maintenance, engines, etc which will in turn create their own waves. The real damage from 2008 still hasn't been fully realized, so there's obviously not going to be a real recovery until it ripples its way through every economic sector.

If the middle class continues its decline, the problem will get worse. It could lead to a downward spiral where each sector's downsizing continues to affect other sectors and those sectors downsizing affect other sectors (continued ad nauseum) until the economy is a smoldering pile of shit. I'm a little more optimistic than a lot of people because they think this is happening right now. I think that recovery is going to start at the lowest level and work its way up just like the devastation. Remember that the banks saw no consequences for 2008, so the devastation started with the average consumer. People are starting to get their lives back together, so things should start looking up as their discretionary income slowly increases. I'm hopeful that the slowdown will reverse in half a decade or so unless Congress does something fucking retarded.

If all dollars are redeemed at the treasury, the government recoups via taxation, as citizens will be incentivized to buy dollars from the treasury with gold in order to pay taxes. Also I don't think this is the happening, there was a huge problem in shipping most of a decade ago when the recession started, with tons of ships left abandoned. One company going under might be a sign but isn't quite enough.

It is interesting to think about though. I work for a US company at a distribution center. 90% of our SKUs (product types) are imported from China. Our top selling SKU is from the US but I doubt it makes up most of our profits. Anyways, we get shipping containers several times a week to at peak probably one 40ft container a day. About half of that product is back out the door from shipping department to retailers within two weeks. Everything is JIT (just in time). We have expensive software to predict demand and make sure that containers arrive just in time, so we can fill orders we don't yet know we will have (for sure). If something goes wrong we have to pay for expensive air freight to not piss off our biggest retail customers. So in reality we barely warehouse at all, we get it in, process it minimally, and ship it out as soon as imaginable. Any interruption in supply chain would basically put 3/4 of the company out of work within weeks.

I'm an American and about 3/5ths of the employees at my workplace (a research center, engineering etc) were Americans or H1B (non-korean). If you knew anything about business, you'd understand that if a big company does not make use of cheap outsourcing available, then they will be undercut and run out of business by another one that does.

Why would an import tax be bad? It may cause some grumbling at first, but soon enough the economy will transition to making better use of native labor and manufacturing simply because it will be more profitable.

When you're talking business, morals don't mean much. Buying local, etc. It can work for a small company who has a loyal customer base who will buy their shit even though it's more expensive, but it's impractical for a larger one. To bring manufacturing back to America and rebuild it into a self-sufficient economy, you simply have to make it more profitable to manufacture goods here than elsewhere.

Not much would change unless the US started exporting as much as China does. Only thing it would prevent would be any potential exclusivity commitments and contracts for Chinese cargo shipping lines which also subsequently lower their cost of fees once their ships reach the US due to them owning a piece of whichever terminal they're at. They're already operating at a deficit due to subsidies as stated before so they've got nothing to lose in the short term anyway. The only benefit I could see is if these subsidies went beyond the global shipping infrastructure and also drove down the cost of freight. It would in theory make shipping globally to the US a whole lot cheaper, but China would still remain on top in the end.

However if the US starts manufacturing at a high volume and exporting heavily again, this could snowball and this would start to unravel China's dominance in their manufacturing and exporting of goods. Currently the #1 and #2 place that China exports to are the US and EU and this could definitely change overnight with higher quality American goods exporting at lower rates. Theoretically if the US started producing and exported even a fraction as much as the Chinese do with US government subsidies, it could put a huge dent into their economy and may actually cause some of their terminals to go belly up much like Hanjin did. Not only would more countries be encouraged to purchase from America, but domestic business would follow suit due to the collective lowered cost of manufacturing and freight making it way more affordable to rely on the US as opposed to China for goods and services.

It seems that Chinese corporations are branching outward and their government is doing whatever they can to ensure that they are the dominating force within the global economy. As a weapon, and especially one in a SHTF context, bows - and especially compounds - are utterly outclassed by firearms, full stop. I would rather take a single-shot .22 pistol over a bow if I was going to be defending myself against someone with any firearm. 3D printing cannot beat the volume of injection molds. While 3D printing is great for prototyping and producing small batches, there is a price-point where the cost of getting a mold milled would be cheaper than 3D printing.

What we should be looking out for are not just 3D printers, which are restricted in what materials they can "print;" mostly things which are not useful for high-energy and high-force applications.

What I think are the best things to look forward to are "desktop" CNC milling, lathing, and plastic injection devices. I'd think these devices would go between $1,000-$5,000 new when developed. While 3D printers may become as common as the dishwasher, the others could be in every 20th household.

This will destroy the cheap bauble markets, but anything maintaining complexity and lacking a completed model online for piracy will still be sold.

People think 3d printers are special because they don't require much skill to use, but mostly because they have "printer" in the name, which people most commonly associate with paper printers, which can print any image you like. Therefore they loosely reason that 3d printers should be able to print anything too, and assume that technology will make that so.

But you can't just handwave away the materials problem, expecting Moore's Law to work its magic in manufacturing. A 3d printer can't make a forged metal part. CNC lathes and mills can mill forged metal.

The truly exciting future is the future of machining, not printing.
