Perhaps the confusion comes from there being a previous breast cancer charity fund raiser that would determine if Skullgirls, Melee, or Magic is Fighting got to be on the main stage of Evo. A mess so insane that it got enough attention on Magic is Fighting to get Hasbro to get the lawyers on Mane6, Melee got the spot… and then Injustice straight up bought its way onto the main stage and pissed everyone off.

Anyway, Labzero only needed funding for DLC because right after the game was finished EVERYONE WAS FIRED due to a lawsuit about some rap game that Reverge and Konami were together on. Konami even once got the game delisted when they dropped publishing on it, without warning, if I recall. Eitherway, in the end they fulfilled every promise of their crowdfunding, + Fukua, and content afterwards (fully voiced storymode, lobbies, japanese dub etc.) were added from traditional publisher money, thanks to things like the PS4 and Vita ports.

As for the mlp fan thing… Zone isn't obligated to take a job. No one is. It may seem oddly prudish of Zone to just ignore a fat wad of cash for what is probably a comparatively easy job, but oh well.
