Why is class not an identity?

Why is class not an identity?

It is an identity.

Because you will be sent to gulag if you don't work!

You don't identify as proletariat or bourgeoisie, your class is determined by your relationship to production.

Because class is your relation to the productive process. It's your relation to material forces.

Selling your labor in return for a wage isn't an identity. It's an action you perform to gather to yourself the means of survival.

Because your personal feelings don't factor at all into it. Class is a material and social relation.

This

Class is about dress, the atmosphere that the character exudes, the facial expression, how a person expresses themself, the chosen expression of wit, how a person carries themself, honour, dignity.
Even the poorest beggar can exude all the elements of class. Sometimes we see rich people and we feel they lack something, it's like they're just like any plain jane or joe but just a bit more cash. There's nothing special about them.
That's because they lack class. Class is something that you can spot right away, it's like an air they carry around with them, it's a sort of cloistered, quiet pride that they need not announce, but it can be seen and felt, a quiet air of pride and dignity.

Not that kind of class, you silly billy.

Your ironic shitposting is still shitposting.
