Socialism isn't the only leftism. The original leftists, you know those men that sat on the left side in French parliament after the revolution, were not Socialists in any stretch of the word.

It depends on the historical epoch. The position that the original leftists held (liberalism) would no longer be considered leftist today as it became the established structure/system. Now, the socialists, are those that wish to revolt/evolve out of liberalism/capitalism, so they're the left today. It just depends on the historical context.

Oliver and Maher are social liberals who wish to place locks and chains over the capitalist workings in order to "control it" and modify it to make it "fairer" They are not leftists since they don't seek its abolition. They're right-wingers located on the middle section of the Right. The Republicans have just shifted so extremely towards the Right during the neoliberal shift. The Democrats are called "leftist" because again, yanks are extreme, they're politically and historically illiterate (don't know what libertarianism or socialism really is), and because the social liberals hold very culturally liberal views. They're not leftists. They're enemies.

I have been wondering about Venezuela. People are saying it's because they over relied on oil, is it really that simple? Why didnt they just…not over rely on oil?

Maybe hindsight really is a wonderful thing.

Because for a long time it was profitable to rely on it and they have a lot of it. While they certainly should have built more infrastructure, like the ability to print their own money, it wasn't as attractive as going for more oil.

And muh market wouldn't have fixed it. There's no evidence private businesses would have invested in much besides oil anyways and considering the state of other South American states it is very likely if Venezuela had been an exemplar of Lord Market the situation after oil prices plunged wouldn't be very different.
