Basically this. A character who learnt her unique earthbending skills through effort (from badger moles) even with her lack of sight. Uses said earthbending power to allow her to basically "see" and be a part of society (instead of being a shut in like her parents wanted) but at the same time this earthbending is balanced out by only limiting her to see objects that are contacting the ground around her, and she becomes blind on loose sand, water and can't see any objects flying/hovering around her (like the buzzards in the Earth Kingdom desert).

Also the fact that she is funny and can make jokes about her own blindness doesn't make you feel sorry for her about it.

I do think that deadbeat mom Toph did seem kind of accurate for the time period, considering her lack of sight and family support to help raise a child. (but then again where were her friends for support?)

Implying Asami was a major problem. The only issue with Asami is how much wasted potential she was. She's one of the richest characters in-universe and on cusp of the technological revolution, you're telling me she shouldn't get a full-body shocky suit of armor?

The only way I could see Asami being redeemed if (a 5th book) made her the villain all along after everything she had done so far (financing both sides of the war in Book 2 and 4, gaining control of her father's company, got the Avatar to fall in love with her and will get billions to help rebuild republic city like that infamous greentext said), was finally realized by the other characters and that all her friendship for them (and love for Korra) was faked to just to gain more influence/power for herself. (and Sato Industries).

It would also result in a massive lesbian break up fight/final battle between Asami (with technology) and Korra.

But yes. Toph has a disability, but she has a personality that does not revolve around it. She has very strong abilities, but you can believe she worked for them fairly. She's lively and fun and useful and not a shitty person, which can be said for many of Avatar's characters, but not for Legend of Korra.

I would've gone with someone who got screwed by Asami coming back to have revenge on her vigilante style. Kinda like the Avatar version of Batman…

But Asami is one of the few actually sympathetic Krew members (the other being Bolin of course).

Asami has the same issue that Mako and Bolin have in that she's a Book One character who got kept around long after it ended. You can tell they tried to find excuses to keep them around (Mako swapping jobs, Asami following Korra around as her cheerleader and gadget mule). But of course it didn't work since unlike the Gaang all having warrants to hang out as they ranged from orphans of a dead land (Aang), tribesmen who lost their mother while having a father at war (Sokka and Katara), a runaway (Toph), and an exile (Zuko) the Krew by large all had established families, caeers, homes. What was Asami doing following around Korra after Varrick's coup in Book Two?

How to make Asami interesting:

1) Actually utilize her being a sheltered rich girl. If you think about it, she's lived a life of ridiculous wealth, and has seemingly no friends, yet is able to socialize no problem, to the point of openly inviting a guy she met five seconds before to dinner, instead of being socially awkward as fuck as logic would dictate.

2) Get rid of the super-martial-artist angle. I don't mind her having some limited combat training, but having her be so good as to one-shot skilled fighters like the Lieutenant, and taking out skilled fighters and benders with ease is ridiculous. Her main weapons should be technological skills and usage of technology in general.

3) Actually make her matter to the team and have proper relationships with the other characters.

Or..have her be like Part 2 Speedwagon, the team support with the deep pockets and plenty of resources to help out the heroes. Sure, she's not much of a fighter but there's more to a support than extra muscle.

If all else fails, dedicated and earnest moral support is always appreciated.

And having someone look afraid when things go south is nice too.

So instead of Korra having spot-on instincts about the shady girl and Mako getting with Korra after breaking up with a gril who wasnusing him, we had the harlot of an Avatar coming onto a girl's cheater boyfriend.

That would've still been fucking stupid though, since Korra still aggressively comes on to Mako despite him making it quite clear that he's taken, and not knowing Asami is evil.

It would've basically ended up as "See, Korra's not a horrible, immoral bitch who steals other girls' boyfriends because Mako's girlfriend was EVIL all along!".

If he only has used pencils then maybe getting him a small set of watercolours would be nice. You can buy a few small brushes and either some nice pans or some small tubes. Then get a watercolour Moleskine sketchbook with it.

It's a bit more interesting than something like "nice" pencils which don't really feel all that different from normal ones especially if you are an amateur.

Also a Pentel brushpen is a fantastic gift. Everyone seems to love them.

To be honest I prefer the slower tech growth for the Avatar world because they still rely on many bending skills. It will be better if LOK is all about how people starts creating early techs that clashed with element bending users.

But yeah, the biggest problem with LOK is that it doesn't have any clear direction. It's like a headless chicken running around. With the original we have this clear part from beginning to end. From ice to fire as we follow the crew and knew them more until it's ingrained in our mind.

I mean, if we brought the original one, we immediately have so many characters we can bring up as part of the conversation. From Toph, Katara, Aang, Zuko, etc etc because how deep they are ingrained in our mind. Toph started as this blind girl that trying to escape the clutch of her parents and later become a warrior with her own merit. Katara is just an ice kingdom girl that can do bending but as the story goes she learns to become the responsible one in the team. And so on and so on.

Meanwhile LOK characters are mostly forgettable. How many of you can gush about a character in LOK other than Korra? Not many.

Oh and romance. To be honest I still can't understand why they create a sudden relationship in the finale. The original created relationship that actually felt natural. Katara cared about Aang, and as time goes by it grew into love. It flow slowly but when they finally hooked up we know it was meant to be. Not fanfic level of relationship.
