Ideological Fetishization

So uh, AMD is trying this now. Che Guevara shirts sell well enough so i guess now we are going to get Hoxha GPUs.

Is this because of Bernie? Its obviously got some occupy references. Are we going to see more of this like Aldi doing a sale on ice picks or Hugo Boss doing a "Serfs of 1917" range?
Is this a good thing, a bad thing or just an ugly thing?
What makes them think people will really identify with a massive tech company as being "against evil big business exploitation"?

Liberals that wear Che shirts do seem like the kind of person that buys AMD hardware.

hardly anything new

To be honest i am probably going to buy their new card despite the patronizing "BetterRed" campaign. I would like it if there were more than two companies that made these things but i suppose market entrenchment and economies of scale means nobody can compete with them.

I suppose either Stallman or the international proletariat need to destroy the current order for computer hardware to not be shit. I'm betting on the proletariat.

It's just not profitable because of the oodles of research required to design the hardware. Other companies do exist but their products are lightyears behind.

this is disgusting and beautiful at the same time.

on one hand, it's definitely commodifying ideology and revolutionary aesthetics, on the other hand, it's normalizing revolution and the left in general, making us look "cool" again.

that soviet-style font and the symbol of the fist has been used ironically since forever, but now it's slowly becoming the norm, and yes thanks to bernie. more shit like this along with the normalization of the word "socialism" can actually bring a revolution, or just class consciousness about.

however this can totally be another shilling done by the cappies just to catch on to the latest trends of rising socialism and interest in socialism in general, using socialists as a new market. i'd say this is a more realistic answer.

TLDR: see
and keep crying about socialism never being achieved

This shit is disgusting. Atleast they are supporting open source software miles and miles better than nvidia.

Are they actually going to release their drivers as free software?

It is amazing people think capitalism encourages competition or that things don't always tend towards cartels/duopolies.

Is "normalizing" it really the right thing? Will people take seriously something they perceive as being "hip" or the latest trend?
I'm not exactly going to think of skinny jeans that don't cover your ankles or playing video games whilst having a vagina when i experience anger at the system.

Better than nvidia isn't something to be proud of, its like a participation award.

It's going to normalize centrally planned capitalism, not socialism.

its not a "right" thing. anything that happens under capitalism is not right if we dont try to manipulate it for our purposes. as ive said, this might just be catering to the new market of pseudo-leftists or just people who like leftist aesthetics.

stop being picky and recognize this as somewhat of an advantage for us. our snowflake form of socialism is not yet recognized or normalize, just stick to normalizing "socialism" first, then push whatever you want to push

Isn't fglrx still AIDS? At least nonfree nvidya packages, y'know…work.

To be fair, interdependence to such an extreme degree is endemic largely to the consumer technology industry.

Really though who DOESN'T like leftist aesthetics? He can betray the revolution fine by me if he will redistribute his fashion sense to the rest of us.

I'm not so sure, i haven't heard of a new automobile company in a long time, I'm used to watching supermarkets exist as a permanent duopoly until one is killed by an invading foreign supermarket and they make some kind of new anti-competition agreement. Maybe I'm wrong, my own knowledge isn't too expensive on the subject.

It worked!

EXTENSIVE. Not expensive. Fuck the capitalist propaganda has gotten to me.

Good for you comrade.

Obviously it's just liberal marketing, but OP is right that it has some interesting implications.

1. Major corporations are now using socialist aesthetics in order to sell their products. Like OP says, this is a sign that young people are very open to socialism. Consider it like a sort of unofficial poll. What's new about this in particular is that AMD is using socialist aesthetics to sell something seemingly unrelated. This is different from Che t-shirts, where the socialism is the object.

2. This is also interesting because the marketing isn't completely substanceless. AMD has been making a lot of FOSS (libre open source software) lately in order to undercut Nvidia. They're showing that proprietarianism is actually weaker and less efficient compared to commonly shared assets. This is more like a company that promotes its products as "union made" or "co-op made," so it's like ethical consumerism (which is still ideology). However, it is a bit different from pure ethical consumerism, because the FOSS drivers and libraries actually impact the quality of the product and make it more desirable.

3. FOSS is socialist, but currently corporations use it in order to maintain business standards. "Socialism for the server farms, rugged subscription models for the end-user." And.. AMD is obviously not even unionized, so it is still obviously bourgeois.

4. This undermines ancaps who claim that FOSS is "libertarian." More people (particularly gaming plebs) are going to subconsciously associate FOSS with socialism after this campaign.

5. It's also just free market ideology. The idea is that because AMD is the market underdog, they are somehow rebellious and disruptive and so on. This is of course completely backwards.

That's still a pretty recent marketing campaign. Do you think it would have been done in the 90s? Also, it is substanceless and ironic (just a lower price), so it is a bit different from the AMD example.

anarkiddie pls go

Well not by pizza hut, we all know who's side they were on.
Hail Gorbachev!

Looks like they finally relented after just saying they would for years. My guess is they finally replaced all of the old code they can't legally release for some dumbass corporate reason.

Do they actually work well though? Even when settling for a necessary evil, fglrx was abysmal. It's good that they made the drivers free software but they need to accept contributions from GNUspergs that know how to get it running on their platform smoothly.

Also, further googling suggests that you still need a proprietary blob to get proper OpenGL performance, even when they eventually release the Vulkan part as FOSS, which is still a little disappointing. They know damn well we don't buy their cards to use MESA.

Pizza Hutt supports the revolution.

Lelouch did nothing wrong

...

That might be more of a question for Holla Forums. i recall they had some comparisons and shit for stuff like Talos Principle.

Think again comrade!

it's patents and licenses for stuff like Havok. that's what goes in the proprietary plugin.

For what? The old Radeon Open Source drivers were the best open source drivers for normal computing, period. If you're trying to play vidya on Linux… what are you even doing? We have PCI passthrough now, just do that.

Have you never heard of Intel? There's a reason people never buy AMD laptops for Loonix.
Such a colossal pain in the ass that I'd rather just have a few native games to play while I'm booted into my distro.

...

intel open source drivers are good too. that said for my desktop a cheap AMD GPU has been great.

well, amdgpu is promising so far in benchmarks. I haven't used it though.

amd is such a joke their only desperation tactic left is to try to explain their incompetence as a result of muh oppression. maybe hipsters will buy amd garbage if we tell them it's counter-culture!

meanwhile, in reality (see pic)

ayylmao enjoy your outdated overpriced shit. nvidia is going to gimp you now

Why get a 970?
If you want a good price just get the 480, if you want the best performance get one of the new nvidia cards.
Buying a 970 is just failing at everything, that's a 5% fucking sale.

bump for interest
