Chromium adopts apng

What you was doing when chrome finally implemented feature they should have done long time ago?

contemplating suicide because chrome didn't support apng

Supporting any image format other than .bmp is bloat

so firefox now has even less incentive to support (amazing for lossless compression) WEBP format?

when will it support fucking mp4

Fuck yeah. Finally we can dump GIF for good.

Is this a joke? WebP is a video format trying to be an animation format and sucks ass at exactly the thing that animated GIF and PNG are good at. Pick lossy compression or pick lossless and focus on the best method. Superior lossless demands per-frame delta compression.

WEBP compresses faster than pngcrush, etc, and at the same time gives vastly better compression.

I'm talking about lossless compression of single image, not a fucking video

This thread is about animated .png

Pleb
just kill me

nice botnet
also FF had apng support forever

You may or may not be aware of this, but adoption of a file format is a lot easier if the half of the world that uses Google Chrome can actually use it, regardless of whether you personally use it or not.

Took them half a decade.

Something more wholesome than counting the shekels from shilling ghacks.net thirty times a day, bitch.

Why the fuck wasn't animation a part of PNG from the beginning?

Same reason it wasn't for GIF.

Because images aren't supposed to be videos.

Well, it was implemented in the second version of GIF, but when PNG was in development GIF was already in widespread use, I don't get why they didn't include that function.

It's because the PNG team always wanted to have a separate format for animation to avoid the confusion over still or animation that happens with GIF. Unfortunately their animated cousin format MNG ended up a little too big to ever really gain significant traction from developers.

They finally supported APNG fully a few years ago though. The right thing to do now is to append animated PNGs with the .apng extension to preserve the distinction between still and animated.

A bit late, FLIF is going to support animation, and is a better lossless format than PNG.

The OS/2 / Windows bitmap format is bloated shitt. Pic related, you might as well kill yourself now.

If you want an unbloated format you should use Farbfeld and compression of your choice like gzip or something. It's literally just the magic number 'farbfeld', the dimensions of the file, and the RGBA pixels. It is recommended to use sRGB atm btw.

It's from those suckless guys™

and if you want an actually good image format use flif. farbfeld is meme trash.

Got any evidence to back that up?

the day you install this proprietary fuck

That's just a shitty graph, the format is trivial to write
